Off to Norwich on Wednesday with work & staying over, any pubs with good beer & food, maybe not too far from the prison? (don't actually know where we're staying yet mind)

The prison is on Norwich's biggest hill. Take the full susser. My dad used to tell me that of all the English towns and cities Norwich had, per capita the greatest number of both pubs and churches.

One pub for every day of the year and one church for every Sunday.
Or something like that...

Go to Zaks in Mousehold (near the prison) for something to eat if you like an American dinner experience. And a rip around the local woods

the 'adam and eve' pub is a very old and traditional pub with good beers (i'd go there) or you could head round the corner to tombland where there's loads of places to eat and drink.

just remembered 'the edith cavell' is also a nice place to go too.

The Fat Cat is very good for beer, and while they don't do food the cafe/bistro place across the road delivers to the pub. It's also opposite Norwich's finest bike shop. Not all that close to the prison, but not much more than 5 minutes by car.

If you want somewhere nearer the Coach and Horses on Thorpe Road is really good on both counts. No bike shop though.

I don't think you'd need a full susser for Mousehold (where the prison is) but there's some lovely riding there both sides of the road as you go up the hill from the prison.

When i was a kid and went on a tour of Norwich castle they'd take you on the roof and explain that the city had a church for every week of the year and a pub for every day.

The missus says the Belgian Monk or the Murderers (Gardeners Arms) are both good.

Yep, dropping a prisoner off for an overnighter after his Dad's funeral in Bury St Edmunds. Picking him back up next morning.

Still dunno where us 2 screws are staying yet!

Thanks for the riding tips lads But I won't be taking a bike!

So it transpires that we're staying at the Holiday Inn, Helleston. Where's good within a short-ish walk?

That's opposite ASDA on the ring road and unfortunately, no decent ale pubs within walking distance.
Best get a taxi to the Fat Cat, or the Alexandra Tavern, or my local, the Duke of Wellington in Waterloo Road, where they normally have about 10 ales on.
I would join you, but heading of to the SW tomorrow night to do the Devon coast to coast, which should be good if the rain stops!

Sadly you're not going to a particularly nice bit of it. I work in Hellesdon, and decent pubs are few and far between. The Whiffler is an easy walk though. If you're staying at the holiday inn they might give free entry into the Vigin gym next door. If so, that might be as good an option. Nice pool too.

A little further afield and to the east of Norwich is The Star in Lessingham, great foodies and beer 😀

Peppermint Park! THAT IS THE ONE PLACE I WOULD NOT EXPECT TO BE MENTIONED ON STW! Reminds me of Past on College bashes when we would hire the place out 4 times a year at end of term and hire 8 odd coaches to bus us all in......messy.....

Used to love the paston bash's that took place at peppermint park, so many great/messy nights 🙂
Went past there a few days ago and it looks like it's finally been converted into flats after years of being boarded up.
