I just heard an interview on the radio with a tory MP who is a member of the ‘Northern Research Group’. Given the record of the European Research Group is this a sign that the south east are about to do a runner with the money they have been skimming from the rest of the uk over the years?

You can get government money for research as an MP. this is a group of northern tory MPS who find another way to get their snouts in the trough by pretending this is about research whereas its just a lobby group
I'd say they're just trying to figure out where their new constituencies are and if there's a Waitrose

They are just governing according to the doctrine of Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister.
You'll notice that if you have a "research" group what you actually have is a group who have already got a totally fixed and unwavering position who then examine the situation, see all the reasons they are wrong, and conclude that they'd rather be right and the best way to be right is not to change your mind to the facts but change the facts to your mind.
