It's a bit intrusive. Seems to run a few processes and a service that affect system performance a bit, and it also was responsible for Premiere Elements crashing every 5 minutes by locking files in My Videos directory.
I'd like to bin it, but what else? I don't like Nokia PC suite either ๐
I want to:
Sync and back up contacts
Sync photos TO the PC (not from)
See SMS alerts pop up on the computer, and be able to send SMS
That's basically it.
Andriod or iPhone?
Symbian...
Once you have connected the phone to the PC the contents of the phone can be browsed from the Windows explorer without starting the Ovi monster.
This will allow access to photos and contacts but they are easier to sync with Ovi. If the Ovi is locking the files in the My Videos you can set the Ovi to use different folder in it's preferences.
The Ovi suite is being improved all the time - just that pace is way too slow!
I think the point was - use Android or iPhone instead. I'll be changing to one or the other come next upgrade.
Ovi sucks, but you're sort of stuck with it with Nokia it appears to be the way they want to go.
I know that you can read the files etc - that's not what I want tho, see the OP.
Pop-up SMS conversations is fairly high on the list since I have to leave my phone over there <---- by the window to get a signal.
My nokia's so old it wasn't supplied with OVI but with a previous thing which wasn't quite as intrusive (though wasn't as user firendly either).
Might still have the disk somewhere, but no gaurentee it'll work with a newer phone...
I'll consider Android etc when I upgrade next.
I've lost faith in Nokia and Ovi suite. They seem to be fiddling around at a snail's pace, sorting one problem then developing another. I used to be able to send and receive e-mail from several accounts on my E72, but not synch with Outlook 2010. Following an update, I can now synch with Outlook 2010 but I can't send or receive any email from any accounts over the mobile phone network and the account setup is locked. Have pondered doing a hard reset (as per youtube video - never done it myself before) but I'm not sure I want to deal with the inevitable carnage that would surely follow, plus I'm actually enjoying not having the constant intrusion of email alerts when I'm away from my PC..........
I loathe the Apple touchscreen for typing (done it and hated it) and it fails the "jeans front pocket" test. I'm wondering whether a Blackberry would be better next time round, but don't know anything about them and can't be arsed to dwell over it too much until the time comes to change.
Have a look at Nokia's discussion forums. Seems to be full of unhappy punters (mind you, I expect most phone manufacturers forums will be the same - iPhone excepted, no doubt)
kmobiletools on linux, but I doubt that helps. Maybe there's anotherOS project that works in Windows?

...and the starting point too far back.
PC Suite was bad enough - find a version that works, then don't _ever_ update it ๐
Sadly the lack of PC Suite support for 64-bit Office necessitated my move to Ovi Suite. I haven't yet found a version that's consistently (or predictably) stable with my E71, although resorting to a firmware upgrade on the phone has improved things somewhat.
