1. How can i download BBCIplayer onto my mobile... online says i dont have the support for that file type blah blah blah... Same thing on the phone, anybody got a link that works?
2. Is it free to use the built in GPS? Also, what can i do with it, im aware that i may need to buy some maps but without them, what can be done free?
3. Is WiFi the only free way of getting onto the internet?
4. Any site with loads of free applications that are easy to download?
5. Sports tracker... ive downloaded it but again, what do i need to make it work? is it all free?
6. Finally, any cool tips/things i should do/get?
I'm sure there will be tonnes more questions headed this way after i get used to it but that will do for now 😀
thanks!
I've got a 5800 and I can answer the one about iPlayer, I've only had it three months(!) and not had much chance to play with the rest.
Logonto bbc from the phone and download the mobile iPlayer. At present you can only view on line but there is supposed to be another version due which will let you download stuff but no idea when it's due.
Unless your WAP is free then WiFi is the only 'free' way to the internet provided you've got the access password or you are near a free Wifi hotspot.
1. With mine it already came installed onto the phone, however you can only use it when connected to wifi, so not actually that useful
2. Yes it is free, i use mine for general looking at maps and stuff. I also use the satnav, which is actually great! However i only this on a 90day free trial, when it runs out, i shall be renewing it.
3. Yes
4. Not that i have found, although if you google 5800 applications there will be quite a few, but as of yet i haven't had much success with the downloads.
5. It is free, all you need is the internet/GPS i think
6. The Collective/Roam/Seasons all should be put on your phone
new update on the software of the 5800 came out other day you can now download from the iplayer site now 😉
still cant get the maps to work on my sport tracker at the min dunno what im doing wrong
Most of your questions have already been answered, still...
Cool app: use your 5800 as a torch
Question for anyone using the 5800 while running: what do you carry it in?
you can download quite a few, not necessarily useful, apps from the nokia hongkong site.
just done a factory reset and the maps now work on sport tracker it looks very much like my garmin 705 if i could work out how to plan a route on it i could flog the garmin 😉
how much does the torch app run the battery down
ive just downloaded the lastfm app which is pretty good as long as your on unlimited net time
and the fact you can now download the stuff on iplayer is good , i can now down load it at home on wifi and watch it while out and about on my travels 😉
its catching up the iphone lol not there yet but im glad i got this , mate got the iphone at same time and i prefer mine, just needs some better apps but they are on the way they say 😉
>Question for anyone using the 5800 while running: what do you carry it in?
My pocket - I don't wear short shorts and the light weight of the 5800 means it doesn't bother me in my pocket when running. GPS worked perfectly on the Sports Tracker app also.
I've downloaded the free AmazeGPS satnav app - be interesting to see how good the voice instructions are (will be using when on the motorbike) as I've heard the (paid for) Garmin satnav voice instructions are pretty poor.
i got free nokia maps with drive walk for 3 months the voice navigation is really good and after updating the software to the latest version other day the gps kicks in really fast
Don't have a 5800 but a couple of general comments that apply to all phones:
GPS Sat/nav kills the battery, so be careful or you could end up lost with no phone a friend option
If you don't want to pay for the nav software and just need a map with positioning for e.g. walking through a strange city, just use Google Maps and switch on GPS use
If you are using stuff like iPlayer, make sure your data contract covers the amount of data download or could get very expensive. Read about a bloke who went abroad and downloaded some music and used the iPlayer - came back to a £21K (yes £21,000) Vodafone bill
