Got MotoG 6 and it’s ok for all other things except the NFC function - it’s never worked. And I’ve tried resets turning off and on at the till all no avail. Even downloaded an app that says it works.
Is NFC quite fickle?
Apparently not all versions of the G6 support NFC. Does the UK version definitely support and, and if so, was yours bought as a grey import from a region that might not?
Other suggestion is to turn it over and try connecting with the phone face down...
Turning it over and trying to connect face down is sage advice for life really.

Bought from car phone warehouse so it’s a UK version I’d imagine. Yes google told me to try face down and that’s not worked either.
Weird. I've had NFC on my last 3 phones & it's 'just worked'.
It sounds faulty.

Second only to 'turn it off and turn it on again' I suspect 🙂
May just be faulty. Mine stopped working on my Pixel, which was quite embarrassing until i remembered to take a card with me.
Not in a case is it?
My old phone wouldn’t always work through the case.
Try scanning a passport to see if the phone notices (it won't do anything useful other than pop up a dialog saying that it doesn't know what to do with it).
If Google Pay lets you set up a card then your phone is reporting that it has NFC. However, if it's a grey import as described earlier it likely reports this to Android but doesn't actually have it fitted.
have you turned it on by pressing the little icon in settings?
my phone beeps when I put it near a nfc card
you can download a general phone diagnostic app. Most phones have them already on board, even if they are sometimes hidden, what did you say it was again...
diagnostic mode is one hidden behind a keypad combination (which is quite normal, even if it does look a bit suspect)
Or download a dedicated NFC reader app, which will enable you to pull some basic data from any NFC, even if it cant handle it or do anything with it.

the NFC loop is a sticker with an induction loop in it, which is ususally stuck onto the inside of the back of the phone, and connected to the mother board with a ribbon cable. quite possible that the ribbon wasn't seated properly in manufacture, or if the phone has been opened for repair, was damaged in the process of removing the back of the case.
If it doesnt show up with diagnostic, you could get it repaired or replaced but its of limited use. Its a good substitute for carrying cards around, being able to use your phone instead and choose which card you're paying from on the screen, but ive only ever used it myself when ive forgotten my wallet.
My car mount magnet can play silly sausages with NFC. Other than that, utterly faultless unlike Bluetooth....
I thought my new phone's NFC was broken until I remembered to unlock with my fingerprint not the PIN.
All good until some heavy work, scuffed up my fingertips and that's enough for the phone to reject me 🙁
I bought a new Moto from Tesco a couple of months back. Told them that NFC was a requirement. They checked and said it had it. Turns out that the UK version doesn't so they took it back and swapped for a Samsung which does. My previous Moto had NFC and was faultless. Can't remember the numbers though.
My G6 never had it, UK phone from Amazon.
I have a G7. NFC works on most things but annoyingly not the till that always seems to be staffed at our local mini Tesco.
I can confirm that my G6 play has NFC which works faultlessly.
