As in the title, I'm in the market for a new laptop, but I've no idea what I should be looking for in terms if current spec? I just want to make sure I get the best machine for the money. A large hard drive would be a bonus.

The machine will be used for surfing, watching video, storing photos etc. not really into games.

Helpful advice appreciated.

You won't go wrong with this

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Lenovo_IdeaPad_Z580_Core_i3_4GB_1TB_Windows_8_Laptop_in_Metal_M81KCUK/version.asp

Lenovo make lovely laptops - 4gb ram 1tb hard drive, i3 processor.

Nothing not to like about it.

Cheers

Will you ever be wanting to do anything like video editing on it? You might fancy a bit more processing power in those circumstances.

I do have a Sony camcorder which records in avchd format so I suppose a faster processer might be useful. Should I be looking at i5 instead?

An i5 processor may take you over your budget - unless you are happy with a refurbished one?
