Why is it that only the Wi-Fi + 4G version has GPS on it?

I don't need mobile comms (I could tether to my phone if I did), but GPS would be nice.

I've heard bad things about the John Carter film, but the books sound interesting, esp for being written when they were.

Shirley GPS would be virtually useless without 4G? If you want to use it for maps when on a WiFi connection they can locate you with just the WiFi signal.

Why? There are plenty of apps that lets you pre-load maps on rather than stream them. (e.g. MotionX GPS)

they can locate you with just the WiFi signal.

Only very approximately and only really in cities.

I use my iPhone GPS without 3G for tracking my rides. Granted I wouldn't want to sling an iPad in my pocket to do that, but someone might find a similar use.

[EDIT - beaten to it]

Ordered mine Thursday morning, arriving Friday. White 64Gb wifi + 4G, although what the chances of the UK getting any meaningful 4G network anytime in the next five years is anyone's guess. Nice to be prepared, tho'.
And before anyone asks, I had a small inheritance from my mum so I thought I'd buy something that will get a lot of use, and I have an entire Viewranger DVD of OS 1:50k maps which will be loaded onto it, for starters, along with UK Map 1:25 and 1:10k maps.
There will be a LOT of ebooks on it, as well. Plus, I've ordered it with the Camera Kit gubbins, so I can copy across photos from my camera and edit them in iPhoto, then they'll upload via Photostream when I'm on holiday, saving a lot of phaffing around.
Can't wait until Friday... ๐Ÿ˜€
