Ok folks ive seen some of you have stoves and the like and im hoping that you may be able to help. Weve just moved into a 1930s house that has open fires in each room. Im keen to get these going but have no idea where to start. Is it just a case of cracking on or do I need to get somone to give them the once over? Any advice appreciated.

A lot of chimney sweeps will test your chimney for you.

Or you could by some smoke pellets off ebay and do it yourself.

Ask the previous owners if they had fires..... If not get them cleaned and checked - cost will add up though as it will prob cost £40/flue.
Think hard about how many fires you really want/need because when not in use they all suck heat out of the room (they arguably do when they're lit also).

as it's an old house you're probably ok (ie it won't be as airtight as a new house I'd guess), but I had a modern house with fireplace and I converted to gas fire insert and the bloke who did the smoke test also checked that the room was vented (it had two built in external wall vents but he wouldn't put the gas fire in without them)as that was part of regs - not sure if for gas or fire or both but I suspect you'd want an airflow with a fire as well - I also remember from my yoof metal sliding wall vents in the living rooms where we had real fires
