We will be in touch
We need a new PC at home. The old one must be 10 years old and despite re-introduced of XP it is struggling to even browse the web.
Key requirements are ability to use Office 365 (word, ppt etc), download/organise photos, and web browsing.
A quick Google gives THIS, which seems very cheap, and we'd probably stick close to the basic spec. The problem is I don't really know what the details mean when it comes to computer specs.
Any thoughts?

Just thought I'd get in there.
Youur link there is a sole trader. Seems legit, but I wouldn't. Do you need to buy a "set" (whatever that is supposed to mean) or is your keyboard, monitor etc fine?
I'd suggest a known brand from a reputable supplier. Beyond that, the world's your mollusc.

you're basically replacing a 10 year old machine with an 8 year old machine there tbh. that's why it's cheap.
Old monitor is 15", and the mouse and keyboard aren't USB, so they probably need replaced.
Yeah that PC is pretty much scrap already. It’s old in a new case.
Have a look on laptops direct, they sell desktops too, if you want longevity and ease of use look for a 6th Gen i3 (8th Gen is just out so 7th and especially 6th are heavily discounted) 4gb of RAM (8GB is better of course) and an SSD. It’ll blow your mind compared to your XP machine, think 10 seconds from stone cold to working, stuff pretty much opens instantly and works well.
This is a blatant sly advert from me, so sorry if this is bad!

Aye, and budget.
Thanks for the advice people. Is 8gb RAM really essential?
My w10 idles at 2.8gb, never goes any lower, so i'd say so, if you aren't multitasking much you might get away with 4gb, thats what ram helps with, in basic terms.
That handyman pc looks great for the money btw.* (you should be ablt to up the ram yourself 4gb won't be that expensive, check it's got a spare slot though.)
*i take no liability for any transation, heehaw to do with me! 😆

Not nessesarily but it does help, my work machine is an older i3 with 4gb ram, and if I have two or three documents open, and two browsers with maybe 3 tabs each
it's using 80-90% ram and paging to disk a lot,so not effective.
If you generally don't do that sort of multi tasking, you can probably get away with it.

Just encase you are interested, the motherboard has 4 ram slots and it comes with 2x2gb dimms installed.
For my studying I bought an ex business PC with an SSD and 4GB ram, I'd suggest getting 8GB for it to run well on W10.
It's what we do at work, when a PC needs refreshing swap for SSD and increase RAM. It's these machines when they get upgraded that are available for sale
Didn't want to create a new thread so dragged this one up from the past.
Mother needs a new computer, budget of £350. I can build a cracking gaming rig but when it comes to cheap and cheerful, i cant handle it.
Tons of Dell Optiplex on eBay but god knows how legit they are. Is it worth taking a hit on one?
Or another option of building up an entry level Ryzen 3 2200g rig and utilizing the fact its a combined CPU/GPU and skipping on the gfx card. Although could end up with a mobo in which the bios doesn't post without an old cpu being present for the bios flash.
Any ideas? or computers for sale?

No idea on the particular one you mention but these are good:
A friend needed their small business office computers refurbed and got a bunch of these. These are more than quick enough for any 'office' type task.

A lot of Intel CPU's also have built in graphics, it's not a new thing.
thanks Retro, they dont look too bad, not much storage but its cheap as chips nowadays
Matty, i'm perfectly aware its not a new thing 😀 I just dislike Intel.
+ 1 on the HP SFF Elite boxes I have done the same as retro83 for a small business and they are great - quiet too which is one thing diy builds can really fail on.

Yeah but SSD compared to mechanical HD (in your original link) will be about a metric shit-tonne faster. In normal usage it really makes a lot more difference than the CPU does. 🙂
Yeah i know, trying to explain that to a non computer savvy mother can be tricky. Didn't bother going in to NVME drives. She'll get an SSD boot drive and an HDD storage. She wants a computer that's "funky" with LED's and glass panels now...gimme a break!
