I've been offered a Golf gtd manual to replace my ageing bmw 320d. Does anyone have any experience of the golf for comfort and day to running compared to the bmw. I like the look of the golf but a few have tried putting me off over the drop in size of the car.

If it's a brand new one then it's a good car.

I have the Mk 7 but a 1.6 manual and do about 30'000 miles a year including some long runs to Edinburgh on a regular basis.

The car cruises well and with the 2.0 engine will have plenty of grunt to sit in the outside lane, the 1.6 is a little lacking so avoid if the extra company car tax isn't an issue.

Previous car was a Mondeo which did cruise on the motorway well due to it's bigger engine but the Golf is just as comfortable and has some really nice options.

The radar cruise on the SE options is nice but a pain on a busy motorway.

I have a 61 plate GT diesel, which has the 140 bhp diesel engine.

Unless the Mk7 is massively different, it's a decent place to be. Cruises comfortably, has parking sensors all round, Ipod control through the stereo, DAB and heated leather seats. I too dropped from A4/320d territory, and I'd say there is similar room inside the cabin, although the boot is smaller, of course.

MPG is decent for my motorway journeys with the computer showing between 55 and 60 mpg depending on traffic and weather conditions.

Of course, if you're getting the 170 bhp GTD, then the fuel consumption may not be as good, but as an overall pacakage, I'm really pleased with mine.

EDIT - yes they are a little boring, but I use it on a 35 mile commute round the M25. So not the most interesting of routes, either.

I've no experience of the GTD, but I went from a BMW 330ci to a GTI a couple of years ago and I haven't regretted it for a second. Fantastic cars in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback peeps. I think its the 2.0 gtd so it should be a bit quicker than the bmw. I doubt it will have leather as the company doesnt go for optional extras as they buy all the company cars outright rather than lease them.

I've got a Mk6 GTD, expect 50mpg ish (my long term average over the last 7k miles since I bought it - 4 months - has been 44.1mpg, but mine has the DSG gearbox which is known to knock about 5mpg off according to the long term figures on Honest John).

Comfort wise I really like the Golf, haven't spent all that much time (and certainly not covered any long journeys) in a 3 series so I can't offer a direct comparison. It's fairly spacious inside - I've done 130 mile round trips 4 up with no complaints (and we're all 6'+) boot space isn't fantastic, but I can fit all the camping gear for a week away with MrsMomo in, although clothes bags normally end up on the back seat.

I can't comment on reliability as I haven't had mine long enough to really gauge opinion, but if it's a company car I imagine this is not your number 1 priority.

Edit to add - just had a look back at tenfoots post, the GTD and the GT have completely different specifications, all the toys that are standard on the GT - leather, heated seats, cruis, nice stereo - were almost all cost options on the GTD (on the Mk6 anyway, Mk7 has a few more bits as standard)

Seems mad that. I thought the GTD was one model up from the GT diesel.

I've got a 63 plate 2.0d GT. I came from a 62 plate 2.0d Mk6 Match. The mk7 is a massive step up from the mk6, I was really surprised at quite how much nicer and fun it was to drive. Ultimately, if you want to slide it around corners, you'll be better off in a red car, but as far as fwd goes, it does alright for me. On the gtd spec, the only toy you don't get is the built in satnav, everything else is there plus climate control which isn't on the gt. I really like it. Fast, corners well, plenty of toys, and doesn't cost the earth in car tax. Economy for me is 42mpg, but I drive it like it.s been stolen along deserted B roads to and from work every day. It never sees a motorway.
