So, between 9 and 11 months ago I seem to remember spending quite a bit of my riding time cursing the knee high nettles that were a constant companion on our local trails.

Since then I have aquired some knee high Sealskinz socks which would likely be very useful in stopping my legs from coming into contact with the stinging bastards. However, as I’m quite a warm/sweaty person, I think it’s already getting too warm for me to think about wearing these on trips out. Trousers are generally out when riding for the same reason.

So, can anyone here recommend any cool, knee high, socks I can buy that will keep my legs happy for the next couple of months, until the nettle start dying back again?

PS. Apologies for stooping so low as to ask about socks on the Internet. And no, I don’t want any socks that are made out of nettles.

No, no, no. You have to learn to embrace the warm, tingly feeling.

Knee high socks whilst on a bike are never cool.

Don't do it.

How about normal socks and leg warmers then? Just ones that don’t make your legs warm.

Football socks, keep them pushed down on open sections and pull them up when heading into undergrowth

Take an anti-histamine before you head out, to minimise any irritation?

Don’t forget to wear crocs or sandals to complete your ensemble.

As you lie in bed with your legs tingling, you can smile because now you know, summer is here.

Thwack em with a big stick or scythe, hit em low and make em fold.

If you really, really have to, white football socks.
I quite like the "pain" of a good nettling, especially in the bath after......it's gorse in my hands that I hate.

How much of your actual riding time did you spend cursing I hope there were no ladies or young children around.

So it looks like this might be thing that people have found a solution to for orienteering types.

GEONAUTE REINFORCED LONG AND DURABLE ORIENTEERING SOCKS

Anyone tried them?

CountZero, last time I tried that I was left very much disappointed with the one size fits all claim on the packaging.

Football socks are an essential part of my spring / autumn mtb outfit 🙂 They nicely bridge the gap between knee pads and shoe during the colder months. Keeping nettles and sharp stuff off is an added bonus.

If someone rebranded them as 'Endurosox' I'm sure they would sell bucketloads.

I thought being exposed to a few nettle stings was a good thing, especially if you suffer from hayfever and you're not a complete bloody nancy!!

I have some 7idp and Royal DH socks which come up to my knee and I tuck under my knee pads, find these good in the winter as I get too hot in trousers. If you can find them they would work, although a quick look at CRC and both are out of stock.

Wish I was wearing them on the weekend, left leg went straight through a gorse bush on the side of the trail, leg looks lovely now...

Ponce... 😉

Nettles

Dreading the English climate, [Romans] brought nettles to plant around their first camp in Kent, intending to use them as food, animal fodder and, more bizarrely, as a quick heating system. A flogging with nettle stems was, they had discovered, just the thing for warming chilly limbs. Enthusiasts might like to know that it’s called urtication.
