Neighbour just bang...

[Closed] Neighbour just banged into my car. Insurance query.

My (brand new) neighbour just hit my car with his rental van while moving stuff into his house. Oops!
He knocked on to tell me about it and was very apologetic and obviously mortified - so no issue there.

He says he's "got a mate with a body shop" who'll sort it.
Which I agreed to.

Doesn't seem much point getting insurance involved when we can sort it all out privately. But is that setting me (or him) up for a fall?

Depends if the car is just a run-around, if its nearly new/worth a few K then I'd want some reassurance as to the quality of work. i.e should it have a new wing when he just plans to pack it with a bucket load of filler.

Meh it's 57 plate Focus with 60k on the clock. Scratches elsewhere on it due to careless (and less honest) numpties at work's car park.

No filler required but possibly some touch-up/respray and some reshaping (or replacement) on the front bumper.

5yo car with other dents/scratches - I'd see what his mate can do.

Can't see too many issues myself-its not like he's going to be hard to find if things do go wrong....someone did this to me at a funeral on Wednesday! Proper shit day!

I am sure there are some people who would insist on sorting via insurers, but I would say if his "mate" can sort it quickly and professionally then there is probably no point. Plus you get to build a better relationship with your new neighbour rather than pissing him off. Might be nice to have something in writing about him taking responsibility, when it will be fixed, by who (so you can do some diligence to check he is not just a mate who painted a car once). etc.

Whilst not quite the same a good friend of mine was reversed into by medium sized coach company, who sorted it out using their own people. She just dropped the car off, they drove her to work and the next day it was sitting outside her house when she got home with a box of chocolates and some flowers.

Had the same thing happen to us in our previous house - neighbour (who we'd never spoken to before) scraped our bumper and cracked the rear light. Got it sorted by one of their friends at a local garage, no problem and no insurance hassle.

My GF reversed into our neighbour's car in her brand new company car. I T-cuted out the scrape in her car and she arranged for a local car dealer to fit a new bumber to his car at cost (she works in the motor trade, so called in a favour).

Was waiting for the standard STW "Oh God no. I did that and was liable for X/Y/Z" revelation/horror story.

I am now happily reassured that I can be a decent neighbour without getting stuffed.

Thanks all.

If you go through insurance it will increase your own premiums as well.

Just get the bodyshop to quality guarantee the finish.

Me thinks though that the bill will come in at c£700 and the bloke will freak/want to cool.

Just took a picture as "evidence" just in case:

Front driver's side bumper. Not exactly major damage, mainly just scratches, but that silver section should sit flush with the black bit at the bottom. Might be damaged, might just need popping back into place.

Sort of thing Chips Away etc would fix on site for about £100.

Thanks footflaps.
Just had a look and Chips Away seem ideal. I'll suggest it if his mate can't cut him a deal.

(Might finally get some of the other scuffs sorted out while they are at it!)

might need a new bumper to be honest due to what looks like a split around an internal bracket. Probably easier to get him to find one in the right colour in good condition and get his mate to fit it. He could always spray it if it's not perfect.

As soon as you mention it to your insurer then your policy will go up every year too so no point.

Chips Away etc will do a free quote, so you have nothing to lose bar 20 mins of your time.

Technically you have to report any incidents to your insurance co even if they are sorted outwith them and it will increase your premium.

You MUST go through insurance.

Then you can have a nice shiny new hire car for the 12 weeks that it'll get them to sort it all out, & don't forget that you & 3 other members of your family were sat in the car at the time & now want/need £££'s in com-pen-say-shun for the trauma & suffering in respect of the 'viplash, man, innit'...

😉
