Its a pointing trowel that's been used a lot. Mine doesn't look like that!
I think the trowel is likely to do a better job than GO's fingers.
Has there been an archaeologist involved?

Think it might be a 'Dibber' or maybe a 'Dabber' or come to think of it it could be a 'Thingymajig', definetly not a 'Hammer' though.
