OK, a bit of fun for a Friday. I know there is a wealth of musical knowledge on here, so see if you can answer this one.
I was revisiting my youth by playing some old Squeeze tracks this morning (punk meets jazz 🙂 )
I was struck by the fact that the track "Up the Junction" only mentions the title of the song once in the lyrics and they are the last words of the song. So, are there any other songs that do this? I know there are plenty where the title is only mentioned once (I can think of at least one from that era where it isn't mentioned at all) and plenty where the title is the last words of the song, but I can't think of any others where it is only mentioned once and is the last words of the song. I'm sure you can though.
I was about to say that!
AArgh. Where is the face-palm emoji. You have no idea how long I've been wracking my brains for another example and it was so bloomin obvious 🙂
Anybody want to try to guess the punk song where the title isn't mentioned at all.
The full title or just a key word?
Just like heaven by the Cure
I think you may have got it 🙂 Yes, I was thinking of one where the full title is never actually mentioned, but key words are.
Punch Drunk - Hüsker Dü
OK, I'll let myself off for not knowing that one 🙂 Might go check out their other stuff though. Sound a bit like Mclusky.
I've reverted to Googling now, so won't add any more, but out of the results, I think there's only really one more that I'd have known and probably wouldn't have even got that - it's an Arctic Monkeys song if anyone wants to have a stab.
Remember kids - Google's for noodles...
Damn - was just about to post Just Like Heaven as its my favourite Cure song
How about Enjoy the Silence by the Mode
it’s an Arctic Monkeys song
came here to say -red light indicates doors are secure
Punk song where the title isnt mentioned? Hundreds of them
Title only appears in the last line? Made of Stone by Stone Roses
Not a punk song, but Song 2
So titled, if memory serves, because it's the second song on the album. Not that you'd know if the lyric was in the song, I can barely make out a bloody word of it.
I don't think Song 2's on an album? - I take that back, it's on "Blur" .. track 2 😛
https://steemit.com/music/@blazek/the-story-behind-song-2-by-blur -
Something something Heavy metal... Well, I lie and I'm easy..all of the time but I'm never sure why I need you
Pleased to meet you? pretty clear I thought! .. and Woo-hoo!
So titled, if memory serves, because it’s the second song on the album. Not that you’d know if the lyric was in the song, I can barely make out a bloody word of it.
And because it is exactly two minutes long. 😉

It's the second track on 'Blur'
Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath doesn't mention the words 'Black Sabbath;
came here to say -red light indicates doors are secure
That's another one I really should have known 🙁 Although, to be fair, I'm not sure I actually knew that's what it was called as I only ever listen to it as part of the album.
Songs where the title isn't mentioned at all doesn't really work as a quiz question does it, as there are loads of them. I mean, any instrumental would work for a start. In case anybody cares, the punk song I was thinking of where the title is only mentioned in part was (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais by the Clash. He sings "I'm the white man in the palais" near the end but never mentions Hammersmith.
A song where the title is never mentioned in the lyrics....
"Shut Up" by Madness
It was in the original version but not the released song.
I think a forest is mentioned once in the Cure's A Forest
a song with the title at the end is…
‘The Prince’ by Madness
Not in the version I found on YouTube.
Maybe there are other versions where Suggs does say "The Prince" though.
There is a new fun category then 🙂 Songs where the title appears in some versions but not others. YouTube reckon that's the official video and he doesn't mention any Princes
That's cos that one fades out before the bloody end 😆
Even the TOTP version lasts longer .
Yeah, he sings "Bring back the Priiin" in that one 🙂
Good song though.
Does this count?
Rod Stewart - Young Turks
Bohemian Rhapsody ?
Nearly doesn't count 🙂 and it's repeated twice. Similar for IDLES-Nice Man (last line, but repeated more than once).
Jilted John is a good one for title never mentioned (and wins points for one hit wonder and famous B-side) but I think we've agreed that there are actually lots of those (Young Turks being another one).
So, I think the playlist of songs where the title is only sung once and as the very last words of the song currently stands at:
Up the Junction - Squeeze
Virginia Plain - Roxy music
Just Like Heaven - The Cure
Private Investigations - Dire Straits
The Prince - Madness
The Overload - Talking Heads
Made of Stone - Stone Roses
Red Light Indicates Doors are Secure - Arctic Monkeys
Punch Drunk – Hüsker Dü
More than I expected to be honest, but mostly songs from a similar era. Does that indicate this was something that was briefly in fashion, or just that we are all people of a certain age?
Another one. I knew there was a Clash one. Unfortunately, also old...
or just that we are all people of a certain age?
I think we all know the answer to that one...
Good one @desperatebicycle
Haven’t listened to Give em Enough Rope for ages. Time to rectify that 😀
A little obscure but I'm going with South American Eye from the Cyclops Nuclear Submarine Captain album by Dogbowl.
Yes that is obscure, but it counts.
New Order were masters of never mentioning the song title in the lyrics of the song.
Another Dire Straits one for you - 'News' from Communique - it's only mentioned once and is literally the last word in the song.
And a bonus one - at the end of 'Hanx' by Stiff Little Fingers, the album title is the final word on the album (right at the end of Suspect Device), while not being a lyric in any of the other songs on the album.
Not my sort of music, but All Modern Conveniences by Clifford T Ward fits the brief.
Is it too far out of bounds to say - pretty much anything by the cocteau twins....
Not what's being discussed but the only discernible words on Into the Valley are Into the Valley and they're the ones written on the label.
Thinking about it that would be a great song for me to do at open mic nights cos I'm rubbish at getting the words right.
There's a little ditty by Napalm Death called You Suffer.
The title is only sung once and is in fact, the only lyric.
Nice one @chipps Communique is another album I’ve not listened to for years and I’ll take any excuse to play some more SLF 😀
