As above, dried it out buy can't get some keys working or the right mouse button, despite taking apart and cleaning.

It's a Sony Vaio with loads of life left. If you have experience/knowledge; is it easy enough to replace the keyboard + mouse pad? Parts are available on Ebay...

Have you disposed of your girlfriend's body yet? I believe chopping her up and finding a pig farm is the way to go.

Yes, both are easy to replace. The KB is usually held with 0-3 screws and 2-3 clips. The mouse is MUCH trickier. You'll need to pretty much need to remove all of the screws from the underside of the laptop and remove the screen (depending upon model) to get the casing offof it.

Once thats done the mouse and KB are held on with little slot connectors which are VERY fragile. Just take your time with it.

What model is it?

Thanks all, didn't expect help to cheer up about it too 🙂

daffy - it is a vaio vgn-fs315e. There are some keyboards and top cases with the touch-pad fitted on Ebay - would you reccomend buying and giving it a go?

Sorry Dude,

I have the top case, csing, screen and PSU for an FS515E.

They're the same fit as an FS315, but totally the wrong colour.

Go for the ebay ones, auctions are usually cheaper than the BIN though.

Best of luck,

M

Check your house insurance - might be covered under accidental damage. You'll have to pay an excess but if you're going to buy a new casing you may as well check to see if you can have a new laptop.

'poured'? or 'spilled'?
very big difference.
poured = buy a macbook, get new girlfriend
spilled = buy a macbook, forgive her, gain brownie points

aye I killed a macbook recently. Small child knocked about 2tsp of water onto mouse pad. Mopped up within seconds. Still fried the logic board. Mac store quoted more for repair than to buy new one.
(am I doing a good job of selling macbook now?)

Get a new girlfriend, after ditching her and sending her away with your old, shagged laptop.
Before kicking her out of the door, use her debit card to order a nice shiny Mac from the Apple website........everyones happy! 😉

Check your getting a UK keyboard if that's where you are. I'm looking for a new Dell one at the moment for a laptop and there are loads of good deals on US ones but not on UK models. Funny that, I would never have expected that!

Can you not just get a US keyboard and tip-ex the different keys with the correct symbol?

Yes you could use tip-ex the keys of your laptop and when you've done that you can go out to the garage and hand paint your bike in Hammerite.

Dude, what an idea! That way people will stop mocking my unimaginative purchase of a rockhopper

Nothing wrong with a Rockhopper, I had one in 1986 and wish I still had it. 18" chainstays, 1.5 tyres, bars heavy and strong enough to go through a carbon frame with a single blow and an incredible 15 gears controlled by shifters that you waggled about till the bad noises stopped, cantilever brakes that caused me to lock the wheels up every time I tried to stop (I was used to off roading on side pulls) and brake levers that must have come off a motorbike! Just the front wheel left hanging up in the garage now.

Righto, this is easy (advice from a person with 25 yrs experience as a computer hardware support engineer on large systems). You might have to have more than one go at fixing this.

Spilled drinks shouldn't be a problem if you immediately powered down the PC after the spill.

Remove affected items.

Remove all the keys from the keyboard placing them in order as removed. The remaining assembly should be in two layers. If it can be separated, do so and wash and leave to dry. If not, give a soak in a bowl of clean water. No detergents.

Do the same to the mouse pad.

Then stick both in an airing cupboard.

If the units aren't separable, allow at least a couple of days to dry out.

Reassemble affected items, but leave keys off.

Reboot and test.

If keys don't work, get a dampened cotton bud and dab the affect key. Actuate the key until it works. If it doesn't, accept defeat and buy a new keyboard. 😆

If all seems ok, replace all the working keytops. Leave the iffy ones until the next day.

You may need to repat the cotton bud process to get the offending keys working.

Should be fine.

Ban GF from coming within 10m of you PC when she has a drink in her hand!

I once got a call to a firm who's roof had leaked in a heavy downpour. I arrived at 1 am to find water pouring into the top of their IBM mainframe. Talk about bad luck - it was a fire extinguisher company - the irony of it!

I stripped out all that I could, disconnected all the channel cables and power connectors and set a large fan on it (which the customer happened to have). By nine o'clock and with three replacement power supplies, the machine was up and running again. I thought this was an achievement, but my employer was like "yeah whatever". Glad i'm not doing shxt like that anymore!

I think spongebob is right about getting the power off quickly will be key. I found an I pod this morning laying out on the Downs and despite it having been out all night and it having been raining and a very heavy dew it worked after I got it to work and dried it off for a while. I think it probably wouldn't have survived had it been on when it was dropped.

Getting the power off is important, but sometimes you can be lucky.

Once fell asleep listening to my fully charged Zen MP3 player. Woke up the next day to find it had fallen off the bed and into the pint of water which i'd placed on the floor next to my bed. How unlucky was that?

Got it open and removed the non-removeable battery. Stuck it in the airing cupboard and to my amazement, it powered back on as normal 2 days later.

Don't try this at home!
