I'm pretty cut up. We got him from the cat and dog home two weeks ago (some rescue eh!). He jumped a low wall this morning and fell into a river. I stupidly went in after him (waist deep) and pulled him out. He died in my arms tried CRP and everything ran with him to a vets but too late his wee heart gave out.

I cannot believe how an animal i've had for 13 days can have reduced me to a blubbering wreck.

RIP Digit

Oh god that's an awful story. Gutted for you.

My springer got ran over about 15 months ago which was my fault. I was a blubbering wreck for days. Thankfully a specialist spinal vet sorted him though.

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear this awful news. Please don't let it stop you getting another dog. While he can never be replaced your efforts to save him show how much you cared, please transfer that to another dog, when the times right for you. Horrible to lose a pet.

Dogs definately become part of the family very very quickly.

I've got 2 dogs and I can only imagine how you're feeling.

Just think of the fun he had whilst you had him. That 13 days will have made a massive improvement to his life.

If you've got a garden, you could put a little ornament or similar in memory.

RIP Digit, you're no doubt in a place were they have infinite doggie treats to eat and green flower filled sunny fields to run around in 8)

Call me a sentimental old fool...but......

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Condolences Kev. I have a dog, also from a rescue centre, that's the double of Digit.

Remember there are plenty more dogs where he came from who will also need a loving home.

At least you're still around to tell the tale - deaths from failed pet rescue attempts seem to be in the news quite a lot recently.

Just wanted to add to the condolences - I remember you posting that you'd got him just a couple of weeks ago, and he looked like a wee cracker in the photo.

Especially rotten time for it to happen as well 🙁

You do realise, coming from a rescue home, you gave him the best 13 days he's ever had. Thats a gift that cannot be taken back.

It was a natural death, probably not that stressful for the animal. TBH you can't ask for more if you were born a dog than to die having a great time in the arms of one that loves you.

Its fine to be sad, but not "regretful". Hope that makes sense.

Thanks all. He was brilliant and for a dog who could have had huge issues had none, apart from humping a stuffed Bagpuss.

I to have avoided this up to now. Really sorry to hear what happened. All here are very sad when I told them. Try hard to remember the best bits, he looked great! We hope you can find a different little monster soon - not to replace him but to start a new friendship.

You did everything you could to try to save him. Sometimes no matter what you do it's not enough. Go out and get another, maybe one that's more at home with water breed wise if you live next to a river. Hindsight I know.

Terrible news & I really feel for you....

But as others have said, getting another dog really is the best remedy for this.I never thought we could replace out last dog of 15 yrs but the family finally convinced me to get another one 2 years ago, after a 4 year gap.Although I'll never forget our last one, having one around again certainly makes it easier & I wish we'd done it years ago......

THanks everyone. Feel sorry for the jogger who stopped just as i realised there was nothing more i could do. Finding a grown man, soaking wet, kneeling on a snowy path, crying onto a dog must be weird.

Sorry to hear this Kev, i was looking forward to meeting him! - Lau and me both liked the look of Digit on the pics! I am glad he went to a great master for his short time out of the kennel.

Get back on the horse as they say. Clive looks like a good un.

On a Good Dog

O, my little pup ten years ago
was arrogant and spry,
Her backbone was a bended bow
for arrows in her eye.
Her step was proud, her bark was loud,
her nose was in the sky,
But she was ten years younger then,
And so, by God, was I.

Small birds on stilts along the beach
rose up with piping cry.
And as they rose beyond her reach
I thought to see her fly.
If natural law refused her wings,
that law she would defy,
for she could do unheard-of things,
and so, at times, could I.

Ten years ago she split the air
to seize what she could spy;
Tonight she bumps against a chair,
betrayed by milky eye!
She seems to pant, Time up, time up!
My little dog must die,
And lie in dust with Hector's pup;
So, presently, must I.

Ogden Nash

Sorry mate

baldSpot - why do think the OP was a bit pathetic for being so upset after 'only' having Digit for 2 weeks - and he could just go get another dog. Funny attitude really.

Thats really sad, hope you can still have a great xmas. I'm sure if the dog could have chosen a way to go it wouldnt have involved sitting unloved in a rescue centre.
