Test match cancelled by the sounds of it, the Covid in the India camp has given the England team the fear.

I understand Indian players have refused to play - scared of getting covid and missing out on their lucrative IPL contracts. India have forfeited the test so the series is a draw. Unsatisfactory.

May not be forfeited, press release has been reissued and has had that sentence deleted - big argument ongoing apparently.

Seems like this is still being debated, could be 'abandoned' rather than 'forfeited' which would mean India win 2-1. Even though India deserve to be ahead it doesn't seem right if you can pull out of a test with the result of winning the series.

Edit: just saw mefty's post saying same

It definitely should be a forfeit. England are ready to play, India has stuffed up its covid protocols and isn't.

I can quite imagine the ECB are thoroughly pissed off, any covid insurances they have in place to recover costs must require teams to have positive test results?

Wonder what 'test cricket is the pinnacle' Kohli will have to say about this (if he didn't care about upsetting the BCCI). Can't imagine he will be too happy about losing the chance for a proper away series win as captain.

Bugger. I had two quiet days at work coming up where TMS was going to keep me company. I actually work better with the team chatting away so my productivity is going to drop now. Ah well, time to put the kettle on!

There seems to be talk now that it's just being postponed indefinitely rather than cancelled.

I wish they'd shut up about test cricket being the pinnacle of the game. It might be for me, but it quite clearly isn't for the players or the people in charge and saying it is just annoys people. Well it annoys me anyway 🙂

The only reason this match isn't going ahead is because players don't want to risk catching Covid and missing out on the IPL. Basically the IPL is more important than determining the result of a major test series and to hell with those fans who are still daft enough to care about test cricket.

To be fair the ECB have also prioritised white ball cricket over the test format for so long that I'm not sure they even know they are doing it anymore.

A real anti-climax to what has been a great advert for test match cricket. Unfortunately it shows that its no longer the revered form of game it once was. T20 is now king.

How long until a test playing nation gives it up entirely. Can seriously see Sri Lanka or Windies going down that road at some point this decade.

Mo is a real shame, never really settled in Test cricket and always felt like a stop gap even though he played some brilliant innings and took key wickets.

Like many others, you can’t help but think if we’d have stuck with him at 6 or 7 he’s have been a brilliant player.

Are we not doing the T20 world cup?

Scotland winning all 3 games to get to the super 12 stage for the first time.

India getting thumped by 10 wickets by ****stan.

And this morning - Stokes is going to the Ashes! So pleased he is mentally in a place to play again and his finger seems sorted.

^ this

The pessimist in me says that he can't keep doing it, and his luck will run out.

The optimist says that Roy, Bairstow, Morgan, Livingstone, Mo....... can all produce similar and have yet to do so.

To be fair to them, they've not had much opportunity to when Butter is in this form. England bat deep but we'd not know as only the top 4 have really had a look in.

Yet his IPL record in the UAE-based leg was pretty poor - one score of 25 followed by four single-digit scores. Hopefully some time in the nets if he’s not getting match time.

Yes- better showing than their two previous matches. Showed good intent.
Now, can Rashid tie up the Indian batters and close in on second place?

(I’m keeping off the YCC and ECB topic, which probably deserves its own thread. Even got a mention on R3 news this morning.)

Not quite sure how this is going to go - we haven't quite managed to bang away the runs in the last few overs that we'd surely have expected to do. We really have to try for 15+ off each of these last two overs....

For a team that rebranded themselves on fearless cricket, today England were way too conservative with the bat.

As for that Jordan over...........

Why's it got to turn to blame? They scored 166, NZ got them in a great game that ebbed and flowed. The TMS statman said it's the first time all tournament anyone's chased 160+ in 9 attempts. Sure, 10 more would have been interesting, if Bairstow and Livingstone had pulled off the relay or Livingstone got to the next skier. Jordan's over looked bad but it still takes immense skill to hit it for 20+

Just be gracious that a better team on the day got the upper hand. Just as Bangers and Eoin did in the post match interviews.

It's not blame, just comments. - NZ won because they risked it. We tried to play percentages - get to a score we wanted to defend.

The England white ball revolution started by looking at Brendan McCullums NZ side and playing no fear cricket. Today I don't feel we batted that way.

As for the Jordan over - it really was dreadful. At a crucial stage, he bowled them exactly the balls they needed to have a go at.

It was a great game, and the term who played better won it. Hopefully ****stan play them in the final, because they've played the best cricket to watch so far.

A good one from the stats nerds at ESPN CricInfo - prior to this game the highest successful chase in the last four overs of a T20I was 56.

After 16 overs NZ needed 57 and they got it with an over to spare...

Great to watch as an a Englishman with NZ citizenship 😀

Really didn't think we (NZ) had much hope going into this- batting takes time to get going and is short on lineup, bowling tends to tie down run rate, rather than take wickets.

In my opinion a big takeaway for England should be that there's a management/strategic problem- NZ have effectively shown that there is no need to neglect Test cricket to concentrate on the white ball formats.

That’s interesting Vinny - we have definitely done that. Test match cricket has definitely changed in recent years with all the short format matches they play. Very few players able to play the “Boycott” role in world cricket.

I didn't have any stats to back this up, but seems to me that test matches are generally not lasting as long as they used to. Maybe modern players don't have the patience to do the Boycott role if they are increasingly used to the "whack it all over the ground and be back in the changing room for tea and buns" style of white ball cricket.

Not necessarily a bad thing either (and I say that as someone who has little time for the T20 format). The test cricket I've watched recently has often been quite exciting.

Hard to see how YCC can reform itself when its largest creditor, the Graves Trust, holds so much sway over its Board. I don’t envy Lord Patel’s task.

Now it has blow up so badly the Trustees would be exposing themselves to serious financial risk if they stand in the way of reform because Yorkshire isn't financially viable if it loses all its sponsors and major matches. If it ain't viable then the loan goes bad and the trustees are potentially on the hook.

The pretence of nice-guy Paine is slowly slipping, as someone else said, he's just Matt Wade with a nice haircut.
And if he's not skipper I'm not sure he'll be picked in the team, there are other 'keepers playing better and without injury niggles.
