Sometimes you have to take matters into hour own hands.
Mrs Lunge is out all day, I was at a lose end so decided to go to the pub.
I now have TMS in my ears, a copy of When Saturday Comes to read, a pint of Butty Bach and have just polished off a huge pastrami sarny and some roast potatoes. I have a seat in the beer garden, the sun is shining and life is good.
Let’s hope England manage to get some runs on the board.

Living the dream ^^^^

Hard going for England but I'm enjoying the contest seeing them up against top quick bowlers. Zampa feels like someone you should be able to tonk around the ground but he's actually pretty tricky also.

I know they haven't played for ages until they came over here but these last couple of collapses are quite un-Australia-like, more like England teams of old.

I was saying to myself an hour or so ago that we needed the Aussie to have an England-style mid-order collapse. Couldn't see it happening though. Then in the time it took to put the chimp to bed we'd taken 6 wickets!

:-O

Just come out of a meeting and seen the scorecard – 2-0 in .2 overs? Did that really happen?

I have read the report and yes it did! First two balls too - has that ever happened at this level before?

Anyway, 87-5.

Ah well, great game and great summer of cricket. I've struggled to get back into football with no crowds but no such issues with cricket - which to me shows which is the better game. Football needs a crowd to give it meaning/narrative.

Morgan gets most things right but I thought going for Rashid for the final over was asking for trouble.

I thought it was the right call; getting it out of the screws on the first ball faced was equally a gamble by Starc and that won it. If he'd not timed it, another wicket, dot ball, and I reckon England would have won. Both sides spun the coin, this time it came up Aussie side up.

He's usually the team bloodhound (sent in after the rabbits).

Ten and Jack must be in the Tufnell/Malcolm/Mullaly class.

The lower the number of overs the poorer the quality of cricket, with one exception - fielding.

Much as I am a crusty old traditionalist, it is irrefutable that limited overs (and now very limited overs) cricket has turbo charged fielding.

Jack Russell was just ridiculous behind the stumps, the only one who comes close is Sarah Taylor.

Listened to a few interviews with Dean Jones, 1 in particular on The Grade Cricketer podcast and he came across as a lovely fella, sad to hear of his demise.

Anyway, no comment on the England women's victories, some really good cricket being played by them at the moment.

and the bloke that's had it lobbed to him from 5 yards gets his name in the scorebook. Along with the bowler that's just been clubbed for 6 were it not for a bloke who gets no credit in the dismissal 😉

at least with run outs they at least include brackets for the fielders, even if it's still not officially credited.

Bob Taylor and Alan Knott were at least Russell's equal andmy father would say Godfrey Evans was better than all of them. Taylor was my favourite - just so smooth, never broke a finger - timing and anticipation were impeccable, such that he made every thing look so easy.

Not strictly TM related, but as this thread is cricket fans this seemed like the place to put it.
Just listened to a new podcast, The Death of a Sports Star and this weeks is about Phil Hughes. It's really well written and well worth a listen, it brought tears to my eyes.

As a kid we got skittled for 11 by another school, but they had Kevin Shine playing for them who later turned pro and was England bowling coach and as 13/14 yo's we just had no answer to this tall, fast accurate bowler.

I can never get my head around an international team getting done in the same way. There isn't the gulf in class or lack of bottle that did for us, and while Hazelwood has by the looks of it bowled amazingly, surely someone could get in against him. The scores say the pitch was helpful, but even then.

Yet it happens.....

Vic Marks leaving as Observer cricket correspondent. Hope he is keeping on doing some radio commentary. I particularly liked his stories about how Malcolm Marshall was just wound up by him. Nothing intentional, apparently Marshall (who was a lovely bloke by all accounts) just thought Marks' west country hayseed walk to the wicket was him taking the piss. To be honest, if I had been in Vic Marks's place I would have taken time out to explain to Macco that I wouldn't dream of taking the mick....

In any case, he is a very shrewd commentator. Understated, but with a very good eye for the game and the subplots.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2020/dec/23/last-post-after-31-years-farewell-vic-marks-cricket

Also, a soft ripple of applause for this little gem.

Like Brexit, the Hundred has been smouldering and mouldering for about four years; like Brexit most people recognise it’s a crap idea, but no one has the balls to stop it.

Needless to say, I agree. About both.

Well that's quite a morning session of Cricket - fantastic bowling from Bumrah, not often you see a spinner brought on in the tenth over, less often you see two spinners on before lunch, and even less often you see Steve Smith go for a duck.

Superb bowling attack, and Captaincy in Kholi's absence, from India.

Hmm, I have a feeling this India team is a better team without Kholi as captain.
I also think that Smith is not in great form.
Be interesting to see how the test plays out.

Sri Lanka batting like the village 2nd XI India out there!

Our spinners are not exactly fearsome are they - pretty poor show on home conditions. Mind you lets see how England bat!

And this, this is just beautiful.

Great shot. Him scuffing up Pant's guard marks wasn't quite so pretty though. Or Paine's grumpy, miserable sledging of Ashwin. The new Australia seems a lot like the old one.

We’ve got some top order problems I fear. Crawley clearly has potential and is worth persisting with, Sibley I have severe questions over and said as much in the summer. Bairstow is not the answer and I’m not sure on Rory Burns is either.

No idea what the answer is mind you.

I've just seen the highlights.... Pant will get the plaudits for his 89* and getting them over the line, but Pujara's knock - 56 in 5 hours but being hit 11 (eleven!) times. ****, he's going to be black and blue tonight.

and now he's getting massively heckled by the crowd (about 200, to be fair)

If his gloves were as big as his mouth they'd have won this 3-0
