I'm right handed and subsequently that has been my strong side for most of my life.

Of late, following a year of gym sessions (usually just weekends) both left and right have balanced out to equal strength & mass.

However, I've now started to notice my left side being bulkier and slightly more defined than the right - in fact on a 22kg dumbell curl, my right arm seems to fail before the left.

I'm not conciously trying to develop my left side and do equal weights/reps/sets on both sides - is there any explanation for this?

It's just genetics, but you can load one side to ensure it catches up is what i've always been told. If it's not a big difference, don't bother trying to change it. Everyone has a dominant side. Mines my right. And despite popular belief it has absolutely nothing to do with the side you use for your "personal time" haha.

I'm right handed, but find my left is stronger in certain tasks. Probably because i use my left for lifting, keeping my right free to do more dextrous tasks. That said, I favour my right hand when climbing? Its odd!

I did used to try and balnace it out in the gym but now I lift the same with both arms, its not as if my arms are particuarly big anyway, although under load you can see a difference in the muscle development. My right arm has more defined bicep and forearm, whilst my left has more defined brachial and tricep, although my left shoulder is smaller than my right following an injury earlier this year which stopped me training for 4 months

is there any explanation for this?

your dominant arm has developed muscle "naturally" over years of use, your other arm has built up specifically in response to a single movement - definition and size are not necessarily an indication of a muscle's strength........

That does seem to be a big dumbell to be doing bicep curls with imo, fair do's if you are, just watch your form, find exercises that isolate the bicep. Seated curl against your leg, incline curl etc.

I really don't think it matters - unless you fancy competing at body building. Most people, even pros, have different sized biceps, what do yours measure? I reckon my arms were about the same strength, when I used to train, but my left bicep looked different to my right - and not so big. I mostly used barbells and was about the same strength as you. I never bothered with isolation exercises as see those as fine tuning which didn't bother me.

Your right handed so you spend your life doing the intricate dextrous tasks with your right hand and carry and hold with your left while doing this. You may of thought your right side was stronger but this is rarely the case. My left is inherently stronger than my right. When I used to weight train in my early twenties my left side always developed quicker than my right. Simples I think.

Not that big to be honest - 14.5" on the left, 14" on the right, but then I weigh in at under 11.5st. I purposely try not to bulk up too much.

Some sensible explanations on this thread, ta - and no, it's not noticeable enough to be bothered about.

11.5 stone and lifting 22kg dumbells = nonsense. Barbells yes, but not dumbells.

You will make better gains lifting with a lighter weight, say 15kg with slow form, concentrating fully on ripping fibres and feeling your arms burn. Throwing 22kgs up and down with poor form is literally wasting your time. You will improve strength and definition but it will take soooo much longer.

Ps: fully accept I'm no expert but I wish someone had shown me the light a few years ago when I used to do 1-5 reps with heavy weights and think to myself I was making gains. I do lift heavy weights but its only once a week or less.

glupton - give over. I'm sure it said 22 on each one this morning and I had one in each hand. I do 150kg on the leg press, 95kg on the vertical lat and 75kg on the chest fly - all machines mind you.

I'll use anything from 14, through to 22 on the dumbells - and what has body weight got to do with strength?

mbr30 - I don't throw anything about, it's all controlled.

What does body weight have to do with strength - is that a serious question?

You also need to work on your legs by the looks of it.

I can do 250kg *12 * 3 on the leg press machine. :p

Yes it is a serious question - I know some fat sods who couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding and some wiry little sods who are amongst the strongest people I know.

You do 250 on the leg press and think you need both arms to lift 22kg? Legs aren't my strongest point, but as I'm not bulky on top, look in proportion.

No - I dont think I need both arms to lift 22kg. But then again - I'm 90kg.

First person to mention what car they drive gets a smack.

and what has body weight got to do with strength?
Bodyweight's got everything to do with it. If you weigh 10 stone you cannot physically have enough muscle on you to curl 22kg dumbells - that is a fact. And yes your claims are somewhat dubious.

I found that my left leg was substantially larger than my right leg. After a lot of investigation it was put down to the ZF clutch in the Porsche, who'd have thunk it?

Not sure about that, but there is certainly a record in the making for the most formerly banned members in one thread...

Absolute nonsense.

A guy I train with is about 5'6, weighs 10 stone. He deadlifts 130kgs and clean/ squat/ presses 30kg dumbells with ease. Then again, we train for actual functional strength rather than looking good.

22kg is pretty impressive. No reason to doubt you. It makes me feel a bit weak though, no way could I do that... I do a forced negative curl with 25s and that nearly kills me!

As to your original question though, I notice that my right arm fails before the left, I just put it down to some scar tissue from a while back.

Deadlift though...now we're talking, My favourite exercise.

OP - Are you sure you're not mixing up lbs with kgs? You wouldn't be the first! I remember a thread here where someone was convinced he could average so many mph, lots of arguing then he admitted he was wrong and it was kph after all! FYI I was at least 13 stone (peaked at 14.7st) and lean when I could curl a 45kg barbell for reps - I also squatted with 140kg and benched 90kg.

Switch hands when cracking one out. I don't know if this will make a difference, but it makes life more interesting.

😀

Glad I could make it aswell.

Its been well documented on here before, I train for actual functional strength aswell. Typical training might involve heavy Asda carrier bags, upto 4 per arm. Lots reps, long walks across town carrying them (when I miss the bus) etc. etc.

This builds real functional strength that you can use day to day. When do you ever need to lift dumbbells? Never! I dont even know what a 22kg dumbbell looks like, doesnt sound heavy though.

Oh yeh

6'2", 85kg, 16% body fat, drive a mondeo ghia x. A proper strong man, not some **** who'd cry if they broke a nail.

Well done david, I also carry bags and flex whilst doing so. I also do it carrying toolboxes and materials etc. I also graft hard most days - as it happens, I like going to the gym at weekends too and the benefits are noticeable in my physique.

Top marks for turning up on cue and spouting about, well, something....

22kg is a good weight for your body weight, but by no means unbelievable, fair play and ignore the doubters. I've trained for years and my left side is often about half a rep weaker, no big deal.
Likewise my physique favours the right hand side, but not enough to be an issue.

Dude - do yourself a big favour and do more work on your trapezius, triceps, deltoids and back. Because that picture shows definite imbalances in all of those. Plus - work on your guns because that's more like a pea shooter. I stand by my original comment.

Ha, that was me told. Will do glupton.

That's a pretty poor pic to be fair, there is more definition than I could show there. Pretty happy with my physique for my size and most definitely don't want to bulk up big. Still, always room for improvement.

Note to self, must stop getting pissed up and posting pictures on the interweb

glupton - out of interest, other muscle groups aside (and I do work my other muscle groups - maybe not enough), but how the heck can you see my back needs work from that pic?

And yes, I do feel a massive fool for posting it, but hey ho.

BTW, I only manage to get to the gym for an hour and a half, Saturday & Sunday

See your collar bone in that pic - if your back didnt need work you wouldnt see it.

Your pecs are pulling your shoulders forward because your back muscles at various levels cant balance it out.
