I went to Hurghada about 5 or 6 years ago - before i got into Mountain Biking. Consequently i never really gave it much thought, but looking back, I would be very surprised if there is much opportunity there.

As I understand it / remember it, it was great whilst on the hotel complex but not so nice outside of it. Although i loved the Red Sea, I found Egypt to be pretty dirty and having been there it isn't on a list of places to return to!

I was in Hurghada last year and can't remember seeing anything about mountain biking. Even if there was the local area is pretty much flat, I think if you look inland you can see some mountains in the distance but can't remember. Pretty hot in April, if you do find an mtb place go out early in the morning.

My advice would be to go diving instead 😀

It is pretty flat. Not the prettiest town in the world either. They do quad biking and camel treks so it should be possible. Probably be better on Sinai. Dahab is nice and close to the mountains if you have the option. Many happy memories in both towns.

+1 ,But thats Egypt in general I love all the ancient artifacts, tombs etc and Snorkelling/Diving in the Red sea was great but outside of this its a dump.

Never heard of it ranking as a place to go MTB riding either.

I used to teach windsurfing around there, fantastic for that.

Amazing for mtbing as well if you're after a lot of sand, half built hotels, army checkpoints, and sand.

You might have a bit of trouble with the police/army patrols in the area back from the coastal tourist strip of Hurghada.

They're pretty hot on security, well tooled up and bored....not a good combination for a relaxing bike ride!

I was in the area about 2 months ago and pretty much got told by the police not to wander away from the hotels / beaches as the threat level was severe.

From the Foreign Office web site:

Hurghada

Enhanced security measures are in place to protect the resort areas in Hurghada. Egyptian military are situated in and around Hurghada international airport. There are checkpoints around Hurghada and throughout the Red Sea Governorate. There are roadblocks in place in the town and monitoring of areas often frequented by tourists. In Hurghada on 14 August 2013 there were some violent clashes, in an area away from tourist resorts. One man was killed

Stick by the pool and you should be fairly safe.

That would be a real waste IMO. At least stick your face into the Red Sea. Might need a boat trip or bus trip as the coast near the hotels is a bit rubbish. Its not that far to some fascinating bits of the country, too

I certainly wouldn't let a mild security risk spoil a chance of a good holiday.

Will have a 1yr old in tow....along with his 5yr old brother so won't be dragging them out on any sight seeing trips, was out in nuweiba when it got bombed so know of the potential for trouble, but Egypt has to much to lose if tourists get hurt so as a general rule your normally pretty safe.

Swimming and diving is fantastic, well worth a boat trip out. The old town is quite nice too, some great fish restuarants down by the harbour. Day trip to luxor, tomb of kings Def worth it, but long day and also you have to go in convoy with armed military.

Full of Russians up their own asses though!

I would seriously worry that your bike actually arrived on the carosel at the airport too!!

Stayed in Makadi Bay which is thankfully down the coast from the hovel that is Hurghada Town.

Can't imagine there would be any decent biking at all to be honest.

We were in Egypt last April, it was 45 degrees C most days with not a cloud in the sky, security aside, my suggestion is to stay in the pool
