Are there any good free alternatives to this £450 leviathan?
No personal experience, but I believe www.projectlibre.org is well regarded.
Gantter is good if you don't need an offline solution. Compatible with ms project too if you need to exchange files with ms project users. Available free from google marketplace.
Ended up buying MS project though eventually but then 50% of my role is PM.

ProjectLibre is OK, I used it a lot when it was OpenProj. Got the odd surprise but for basic stuff and for exchanging with MS Project it passes.

I use Basecamp a lot, but it is a totally different thing to MS Project and would not be an alternative. [url= https://www.zoho.com/projects/features.html ]Zoho Projects[/url] is another option again if you don't need offline. Comes into its own for collaboration and integration with other cloud software like Google Docs.
In my experience the problem is when you need to share your project plans with other stakeholders who do use MS Project
