...coming to the end of my contract and considering a move to Three on a sim only contract and keeping my Samsung S3. Will I need to get the phone unlocked?
Edit...is there a way of checking if it is unlocked already without trying another networks sim in it?

Not AFAIK. Just order a free Three PAYG SIM from their website and try it? Or if at the end of your contract Vodafone should unlock for free anyway so ask them?
