We will be in touch
We went to stay with freinds this weekend & took the wifes car to give it a run, whilst flicking through the computer I noticed the main trip had not been re set for over 30,000 miles about 4 years!
I was mortified to see.
17mpg & 22.7mpg
The same car on the run with a 50mph average hit 40mpg yesterday.
My car over 600 miles.
26mph 38mpg
Its pretty congested where we live, & the wifes work & school run is all done in 30mph zones, but mine isn't and still a lowly 26mph average.
No wonder I hate driving.
It got me wondering if anyone does even less than 17mph average speed.
I can't beat the mph figure but kept the trip computer running for about four years running a Berlingo, covering about 70,000 miles.
Over that time most of the mileage was motorway commuting but with congestion at the end.
Average Speed 32 mph.*
Fuel Consumption 37 mpg* (1.6 petrol)
Like you I was surprised how low my average speed was.
My trip computer's been running for about 1500miles now, 50mph and 39mpg* (1.6 petrol C-max) but that probably includes 4x 250mile motorway trips.
*checked against petrol reciepts and it's accurate.
On the commute I reckon the time difference between bike and car is actualy small enough to be negligable, I used to beat my mum to school by bike, 15miles, although she had to go round a one way system which adds ~3 miles and I took a straighter route via some unclassifide roads where the car went the long way ont he A-roads so nearer 5 miles different.
My Focus currently shows 33 mph and 36mpg averages.
Most of those journeys are less than 10 miles so probably to be expected.
39 mph and 46.7 mpg here. That's over 4000/5000 miles in the big fat Mondeo.
My 2600 mile old Passat is showing 41mph and 48.9mpg
I reset mine every tank, but drove my OH's car into work today; a 1.6 Pug 308. It's showing 40mpg and avg speed of 32mph which sounds right given the journeys she does.
I dream of a 40mph average... It would cetainly ease my road rage.
Maybe the wifes 17mph average has something to do with her being so tetchy!! 🙂
28mph and 47.2mpg for the last 5-6k miles, focus 1.8 diesel
Over about the last 3k miles 32mph & a smug but smokey 50mpg - 2.0 diesel mondeo
My old 1.6 Golf is sitting at 43 mph average and 42 mpg.
My 3.5 Ton Renault Master (which is normally fully loaded) is showing 34.5Mph and 32.6Mpg, this has been over the last three months and 12454 miles 🙂
I can average 43 mpg in my C180 but i have to keep the revs below 2000 rpm, even when accelerating out of junctions, like most cars keep them under 2000 rpm and you will notice a real difference.
My SatNav - admittedly only used on the longer trips speedier trips is still a depressing 37mph - mpg not known but isn't that good at no better than 35mpg (Forester 2.0)/
And don't forget people, the odometers in your car (electric/tripcompuetrs/mechanical) are giving you higher than actual figures ('tis the law), by up to 10%. Thus the MPG off the computer are similarly actually worse than it's telling you. (grumble grumble mutter mutter)
Ilkley to Staines this morning, 231 miles average speed 66mph.
Not bad for monday morning 🙂
Average speeds round town are always really low e.g. my 3.5 mile commute to work is twice as quick by hack bike (almost 3x if I take the proper road bike)!
Don't have any of these fancy electrical gubbins on the car, but I've always suspected the average speed would be pretty low. Unless you do serious motorway miles, you can drive like a lunatic, or Miss Daisy, but the difference in your final journey time will usually be negligible, even without traffic. Yet every morning there'll be someone seemingly magnetised to the bumper of the car in front. Impatiently [s]overtaking[/s] pushing in to the small space in front despite slowing the oncoming traffic, and generally risking the safety of everyone around them. All for a few seconds.
Actual time, and the perception of time, are two very different things when driving a car.
Just checked the wife's Yaris D4D 29.1 mph, 55.6 mpg, I reset the trip on my Smart earlier this morning but its usually low to mid 30's mph and low 70's mpg.
over 7000 miles:-
27mph average
19.5 mpg average
keep them under 2000 rpm and you will notice a real difference
Yes, an engine full of crap as it'll never get burned off... 😉
Audi A4 2.8 Quattro petrol, probably around 27mph/25mpg if it's been used for commuting, 45mph/30mpg if there's a couple of motorway runs in there too.
I dream of a 40mph average..
I dream of a car with the ability to tell me more than just the speed and the mileage. It's still easy to average 55mpg in it so I won't complain about the lack of wizardry.
martin, I will swap you my car with its on board computer, I dont care what your car is, I will do it, straight swap today..... 🙂
According to my computer average speed is 22mph and average fuel consumption is 12.9 l/100 miles.
Err, need to do the maths on that but guestimate about 34ish mpg.
Not sure what distance this is over but it's been a while since it was reset.
19mph. The joys of the M62 at rush hour
45.3mpg. Not bad for a big old diesel Mondeo estate.
When I was younger and drove everywhere flat out, it was impossible to hit more than a 35mph average on a stretch of b road I knew very well. A standing start from a t junction and one tight bend were the only bits where you were under 50...
