I've got a notion to buy a motorcycle. I've found something I can fettle until I can get my test and license sorted out. The bike in question is in Wales, I'm in Fife.

Has anyone any experience of having a bike shipped by a courier or specialist bike transporter? Any ideas on costs?

Wow. That escalated quickly!

Is it a runner? If so, and you can sort out insurance, I might be able to help you out 🙂

Yes, it's MOTed and good to go.

It's a random punt.

Think I paid about £100 for mine from London to chesterfield but I did have to wait till he had a few others down there to collect as well.

Ten minutes to go and I think it's just too much bike.

It’ll be fine. The boxers are heavy but all the weight is low down. They are easy to ride.

Not a huge amount of power. Probably same or less than my first bike. I’m still alive.

If it had been over this side of the country, I would have ridden it up for you, for cost of the train back

Take LOTS of pictures :s

Sold a bike a while ago on ebay, specifying pickup only, but the buyer from down South arranged a transport firm that was local to me to pick it up. I saw it into the van and strapped down, all OK. Driver filled in a condition on collection report, which I signed, and they were away (the only thing on the report was that the pillion seat cover was packed separately).

A few days later I get a call from the irate buyer about why didn't I tell him that I'd dropped the bike since taking the ebay photos - smashed speedo, mirrors, cracked fairing, etc.

Since he'd arranged the transport, they'd only deal with him. The copy of the condition report they gave him had been doctored to add "smashed speedo"...

I rang them and we got into an almighty barney, with them refusing to give me the original form, getting abusive, and all matter of unpleasantness. They eventually stopped answering my calls. I had no option but to let the buyer sort it out with them, but it made me look a crook. I did report them to local Trading Standards, but because I wasn't the customer, they would only "keep a report on file", rather than take action. (They buyer did eventually get it sorted.)

The firm was 'Roadsaway' or 'Roads Away' based in Holywell, N Wales.

Buy local or hire a van...

Used this company to transport bike to a very particular buyer and cant fault the service.
Whereas some who I have dealt with were a bit, well not as good.

http://www.motomovers.uk/

Has a good reputation for the motorbike forum that I frequent.

No idea if it's warranted, as I've not used them myself.
