Watching Bob Mortimer drink a bottle of fizzy water in one go and the resulting after effects. A comedy classic.

Which episode was that in ?
I thought I'd seen them all, but don't remember that !
Must be getting old(er)

Actually watching this now i've found a reliable stream in Sweden.

Really can't see the point in fishing generally, but it's still very fun to watch (still on season 1 though...)

So are all of us men of a certain age taking notes about our health?

I think I need to get my testosterone levels checked as I ticked most of those symptoms mentioned.

Re fishing - I quite fancy taking it up, but I'm also very aware I need to do more social stuff and not sit on my own for hours on a river bank.

Every time I ask to get my testosterone and thryoid levels checked they're low but within normal so the GP will do nothing despite my general shit health, symptoms, and family history of low thyroid (mam and brother). I've asked if I could just try some of each to see if it helps, but no, your within normal, just low normal.

As for socialising totally, especially as I'm not working due to health issues, and were in a new place so I've no contacts here at all. I live 50m from a fishing river, but it's just an other solo activity.

Tried the cycling club and they're just too fast even when it's supposed to be a steady social (seems the faster guys come along for a easy ride, but just end up pushing on all the time); walking group is no-use due to knackered knee limitations; tried the men's shed and a couple of other men's groups, but they're not for me, just don't click with me; thought about community allotment stuff, but none near and tbh I'm non-use for digging and stuff with health.

Sorry for the poor me post, I guess it hit a spot.

Testicles seem ok though! They're made of stern stuff, even survived getting the snip. Yeh all that fun of the snip and I'm still firing live ammo!

Fishing doesn't have to be a solo activity. I often go by myself as I find it meditative. However I also do a few socials.
Join a local club, they have get togethers, work parties and matches etc.
Lots of supportive Facebook groups too. I am organising a trip with a newcomer to pike fly fishing to take him out on the Somerset levels.
Check out the Angling Trust for get in to fishing days and local clubs.
I am based in Devon, so happy to take anyone here out for a few hours.

+1. I contacted my GP yesterday - blood test booked in 3 weeks. (3 weeks wait for a blood test - WTF!)

Curiously, when I read up about low testosterone, one of the symptoms is 'forgetting words'. Not general forgetfulness, which I don't have, but forgetting words which come back to me a few minutes later. I've been getting more concerned about this in the last few months - it's this as much as low energy, etc that's prompted me.

On the subject of low thyroid years ago when we couldn’t conceive my Dr said I had marginally low thyroid and it could be causing my low sperm motility. He got me to take a supplement called Thyroplex.

Amazingly within a month of taking this stuff my wife was up the duff.

Has anyone done one of those numan type online bloodtests. I'm 54 and a lot of Bob's conversation rings a bell

Been watching and although I'm not as old as them, I am thinking it makes sense to get checks sooner...away just now but when I get back I'll be calling doc to get some checks done, still a bit young for prostate check but will be asking for 1 of those as well...suspect I'll be told to go away but I reckon if things can be spotted sooner then they can be fixed 'easier'.

Mildly annoying how you can all just call the doc and get tests. I kid you not we are usually 20+ in the queue and greeted with a recording which states "Unless your condition is classed as urgent please hang up" If you do get to number 1 in the queue you are then triaged by the reception staff and unless they agree that you are an urgent case they will not grant you an appointment. So if I wanted a blood test, no chance.

My surgery uses Ask My GP, and the GP rang me about 4 hours after I explained the issue. We have a very good GP surgery. One of my friends is a GP and his practice is getting rid of Ask My GP because they get too many time wasters using it. I'm not sure that ringing my GP to ask about why I've been feeling bleurgh for months, and do they do routine prostate tests is time wasting? (On the last bit, they don't unless you have symptoms. That's not good.)

Paid the Mach Loop a visit this week, that's my equivalent of fishing - beautiful scenery, normally people to talk to if you want to, plenty of space if you don't, and if anything DOES come through, it has the same unexpected surprise as a decent bite. 🙂

@idlejon, sounds like your set up works. Ours was pulled together with 2 other practices under a group called Soverign Health Partnership. Since then it has bombed with regards to seeing a Dr. It used to be hard and you might have to wait a couple of weeks but you could book something, now, nothing. It will only lead to more people using A&E (which they can't now do as the local hospital has gone into emergency measures) or more people getting properly ill when it could have been caught soon.

It really is frustrating when you see healthcare proffessionals telling us all to look after ourselves and get checked out, when you can't. My last DR appointment I ended up paying 45 quid for a Push Dr virtual appointment and it finished by saying "So I will send the notes to your GP and if you can set up an appointment" No, no I can't!

Unsure how easy it'll be to get an appointment, but I'll try. Given the TV adverts being pushed for cancer checks I'm hoping it won't be a no before getting a chance to ask.

I wish. To try to get an on the day appointment you have start phoning at 8am, it's usually around 100 redials before I might get an answer, then the places might have all gone. If they have you might be able to book an appointment in a couple of weeks time. Otherwise it's try again at 8an tomorrow.

If you do get 'seen' ours are all phone appointments either morning or afternoon, no specific time. We did manage to actually get our son seen face to face after a phone appointment.

I'm currently waiting for to see a consultant about my wrists after having to get referred to a new one as we've moved health boards, currently 5 months waiting to hear from them so they can carry on a treatment I was getting in our old health board.

My daughter's a nurse to I know the issues, but it's no fun when you're suffering.

Re PSA testing for enlarged prostate

(On the last bit, they don’t unless you have symptoms. That’s not good.)

If you’re over 50, you are entitled to a PSA test, so if you’re concerned, don’t let them fob you off. There is a concern over false negatives and false positives though, so worth a quick look at the NHS website to see if it’s for you.

Earlier this year I phoned the docs as I was having a few problems with my waterworks that were in the prostate warning nature.

Had a blood test within 2 days, appointment with the GP a week later when the results came back for the finger test.

Luckily all ok

I'm watching s4 now.

Genuinely pleasant to watch. I haven't been fishing in ages. Reminds me of watching A Passion for Angling (Chris Yates and Bob Nudd was it? Voice over by Bernie Cribbins).

Really enjoying this! I'd love to go carp fishing again but they're seen as an invasive species over here and you're meant to kill what you catch. I'd rather not. But I'm going to order PFA on some format and watch it again.

Funnily enough, that's what I said to Mrs R. See also the south island of NZ.

I watched the Christmas special with my wife earlier. We've not seen it before but thoroughly enjoyed both the visuals and the convivial dialogue. The best but was when Paul proposed Christmas every four years as my better half had suggested the exact same thing on this morning's dog walk.

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but its programming like this that will go if the BBC gets a radical change in funding. Imagine trying to sell the idea to the suits from the commercial ad revenue departments.

So true

This one felt slightly laboured to me, if i'm honest.

The last two Christmas specials with Chris Rea and Gazza/Paul Heaton and co. were brilliant.  No offence but Ulrika-ka-ka-ka?

Beautiful visuals as ever, of course.

I'm not sure about this. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved the previous series, but another 2 could be dragging it out for a bit too long?

I know what you mean, but a sub-standard episode of Gone Fishing is still better than most other things.

They sit, chat and fish a bit in a nice location before they sit, chat and drink a bit in nice accommodation...i think it'd be already stale if it was a format that could go stale
