He's got a few good points, too actually.

Less relevant if he's speaking from his home in LA.

Smiths were great.

He's a noob

Has he got a record to sell at the moment?

Time he dried up and blew away.

He does make some perfectly valid points though as usual he does it in such a sanctimonious, miserable way that he will turn people off his message. He reminds me of some notable people on here who you can guarantee will say the opposite to everyone else so consistently that you can't help but feel that it's a conscious decision to do so.

I don't like the British focus that does seem to be creeping into the coverage - certainly more than I recall - though maybe that's a reflection that we're doing better so that there are good British performances to focus on.

I still love that we're doing brilliantly well though and take no issue with the happiness it brings to many people.

Ok let's grant him his wish, someone drive him into a lonely woodland and put him out of our misery. Was relevant years ago, now just a lingering embarrassment.

Morrissey was also heavily critical of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June, comparing her reign to a dictatorship and describing the celebrations as "a new lesson in the force of tyranny".

Try living in Syria, then you'll understand the terms "dictatorship" and "tyranny"

He's such an utter cock. It's not even worth getting angry about, as it's nothing new: Morrissey whinging about fictional problems.

Can't stand the bloke, never liked his "music" if that's what you could call it. Now he comes out with this - I think he's missing the limelight especially after all that crap he came out with about the Falklands too.

Yes but plenty of people gushing about how great the olympics are, are all over the media. i see no problem with anyone having an alternative view.

I accept that this sort of attitude is unacceptable on here. In my defence, i'm new and in time, will hopefully learn the error of my ways.

Mike I don't think it's what you're saying that's the issue but rather how you say it. Presenting opinion as fact is never going to win friends.

He's stuck in the 6th form common room desperatly trying to be controversial, (although some of his comments are valid) but it's a bit sad really and smacks trying to be different just for the sake of it, and as a result pisses people off, Mike 😉

Hes starting to look desperate and quite sad.

Hes not the singer that he once was and those tshirts on stage were bad enough. Get a life. Last week they were giving away tickets for his concert as a 'free gift to fans'....right. Not because you had swathes of empty seats?

It seems that presenting facts as facts isn't poplar on here either.

I fully believe he believes what he says. He's not desperately trying to be different. And it appears he's picked exactly the right moment to make the comments. There'd be no point making them in a few weeks when it's all forgotten would there?

Really?

I just feel that he's a grumpy, reactionary old git who says things based on what reaction they'll get as a primary consideration. Maybe unfair but I just can't see it any other way no matter how fairly I try to consider it.

I like morrissey because he says what he thinks. And I reckon he makes some valid points, albeit in his own style which seems to be what people are focussing on rather than the message.

Apparently intelligent people being sucked in to an opinion formed on style rather than substance...

How boring.

No, I just said it for the hell if it.

Yes, really. When did Morrisey ever say anything cheerful, or did you miss the 80s and 90s? He's always been a grumpy anti-establishment type. He didn't suddenly become one because a few million have masturbated themselves into a froth over the Olympics.

If I was Morrisey, and I wanted to make a point about how shite I think the Olympics are, I'd pick now to make it. If I wanted to make a point about anything else, I'd probably wait until GB was back into upcoming winter misery mode. I'm sure he'll make a few more pronouncements that will piss the likes of hora off because he might have to stop and think about things for a minute.

I should add that, I'm not a fan of his, nor do I agree with everything he has said about the Olympics.

I haven't seen any goosestepping, book burning or jews being murdered yet. Danny boyle missed a trick for the opening ceremony IMO.

On a more serious note, the man is an activist who tells everyone else how to behave whilst carrying on like a spoilt rich brat, much like geldof and bono in that respect. I reckon if we are gonna turn into nazi germany over this he should be the first to be machine gunned into a mass grave.

To be fair, it's quite easy to become depressed with humanity on a coach trip of that length. Saga holiday does do flights though so he shouldn't complain too much.

Does seem to rather go against the lyrics of one of his songs, which is one I'm rather fond of,
as it happens.

Irish blood, English heart, this I'm made of
There is no-one on earth I'm afraid of
And no regime can buy or sell me

I've been dreaming of a time when
To be English is not to be baneful
To be standing by the flag not feeling
Shameful, racist or partial

Irish blood, English heart, this I'm made of
There is no-one on earth I'm afraid of
And I will die with both my hands untied

I've been dreaming of a time when
The English are sick to death of Labour
And Tories, and spit upon the name of Oliver Cromwell
And denounce this royal line that still salute him
And will salute him forever

The bold bit is my emphasis.

Well the hook line featuring 1939 Germany, certainly hooked a few, but the message got lost.

Wealth, celebrity and the London centric press. As for patriotism, only those who can afford to be dream the patriotic dream will do so after the games, while the rest slip back into the grim Winter reality of a failing economy. Overall there is nothing to be patriotic about.

I think the world would be a poorer place if it wasn't for the likes of Morrissey, John Lydon and others of their ilk. Yes they can be insufferable but they make life a bit more interesting than the bland fare served up by Cowell etc

I think he has a fair point about the gurning royals trying to cash in on the feel good factor same as Cameron desparately chasing around for a gold medal in the first few days. I also cringe everytime the crap tune is played. I also realised i have no idea what the second verse is when they played it at the opening.

Cameron desparately chasing around for a gold medal in the first few days.

Slight hijack, but according to that notorious rabid epicentre of left wing bleeding heart 'journalism', (they must believe it, they ran no less than four pieces on it!) Cameron was never going to be present at medal time:

The royals are utterly reliant on public opinon, hence the need for jubilee extravs or a good wedding or being seen on the telly at the right time just the same as the politicos. They know they are an outdated idea on their last legs and so have to work hard on public opinion.

Well I didn't know that - it's complete news to me.

This revolutionary fervour amongst the masses to get rid of an outdated idea on its last legs appears to have gone right over my head.

Just one final push and the UK will be declared a republic eh ?

Morrissey is just expressing his *opinion* which he is entitled to, as are others to disagree. I think there is some truth in what he says although I think he overcooks it.

Maybe he just saw the news with the sound off. Watching people waving union jacks, throwing things and getting chased could easilly be mistaken for an old fashion right wing rally...

Quite a good way for the nation to reclaim their flag I think.

As a lyricist Morrissey is one of our very best. He describes the world as he sees it, and has he knows a lot of people see it but are unwilling or unable to say openly. He has human nature and the reality of living described better than any other lyricist I know.
But when it comes to songwriting his output was IMO far better when he worked with Johnny Marr than as a solo artist.
He also has a weakness for saying deliberately provocative things and standing back and watching the inevitable frothing that follows...
I;m always amused by the number of people who go mentally angry at the first mention of Morrissey but when you dig a little you find they don't actually own an album or have spent any time listening to his songs. They respond to the provocative persona he plays, and completely miss the fact they're being played with...
We need more artists like Morrissey
