I've got a Yamaha vity 125 that I had for a bargain price so I can ride to work on it and dodge the traffic. It's all good engine wise but the back brake is crap.
It's been standing for a while so I presumed it was seized up. Took the rear wheel off, sprayed with penetrating oil etc. Cable moves the cam fine etc. Put the shoes back in and all moves fine. I've put the back wheel on and all good. Patting myself on the back etc. Smug face.
Then the back brake goes to feeling like it's seized again. Not sure if the cable is binding or something is sticking on.
My first port of call was to order a new cable but I have no clue about scooters, is there a Halfords for scooters ?
I can get some new rear shoes off eBay for cheap which might help ?

Wemto.com or cmsnl.com are good for parts and diagrams

Did the brake shoes have springs pulling them back together? Check the springs.

I'd wang a new cable on to rule it out.

That's a great link thanks sobriety. Might just order a cable and springs etc.
The shoes had springs on them pulling them back and there is a cable spring to pull the lever back near the adjuster nut if that makes sense.

Cable routing, got a tweak in it? You're a cyclist, you'll have checked that - lever movement ok? Drum brakes are a bit gash anyhow...

Lever seems fine with the wheel off and no pads in. All fine up to the point where it's back together then it seems to stick on

If you assemble it and don't tighten the axle, is it free/working?

as above, also when it is back together don't put the cable on and try moving the 'lever' that comes out of the brake hub (ie take the cable out of the equation). ? how much does this lever move - if it's not atall it sounds like the pads are binding(are they right pads, if it moves lots and lots and then sticks it might be overcaming

Improving cables(which may or may not be helpful) - hang cable as vertically as you can (or at least so that there is a decent downhill run on it - so should be able to do in situ), at the high end make a little reservoir for oil that you can tape/fix around the top of the cable (decent plastic bag and tape worked for me), put some runnyish oil in it and then push/pull inner up and down after a few wiggles clean the lower(wheel) end of the cable, repeat quite a lot. (*this is from dirt bikes where you used to get lots of crap etc - it wont help with bad bends, cable splits etc etc)

The lever doesn't seem to move too much so I'm wondering if the pads are sticking inside the drum. Not sure if it would free off while riding and the vibrantion etc but I haven't ridden it on the road yet. Going to try new shoes and cable and re move and re grease anything that moves.
I've ordered some parts from cmsnl but not sure how long the delivery will be as they are coming from Holland by the looks of it

From my time with drum brakes just like disc brakes is the shoes can cause a lip where the shoe material stops, it's not hcatch on this is it?

Just takes some sand / emery paper to it.
