I killed my Xperia while out riding on Wednesday (got wet).

I've been using it to run our local mountain bike youth club when I'm not at home/pc/laptop.

Options are:-

Posh Mobile
pros = v nice and simple. sexy.
cons screen size limited, risk of breaking when out biking

Cheap Mobile teathered Tablet
pros = cheap - £200 cheaper over 2 yrs. Doesn't matter if I kill it again. Big screen, so faster.
cons 2 items rather than 1. not so sexy a phone.

Any issues with speed? experiences?

Thanks for looking. Hope it makes sense.

Detail
Xperia has been great. I bought the phone from a mate. I've had a £15pcm SIM Only contract with orange (£15 pcm, unlim text and 500mins + 500MB data + home broadband)

I'm planning to buy a Samsung Galaxy s3 to replace it (£29 pcm, unlim text and speak + 1GB data + home broadband)

Alternatively a mate wants to sell me a nexus 7 for £140. I can get a tethering mobile for £71 (Galaxy Ace) from carphone warehouse.

p.s. I don't do apple. Childish I know.

Can't you just get a 3G enabled tablet? Or is that only available on the iPad?

I guess if you really want a proper mobile office it would be some sort of netbook and tethering. If its just answering emails then a phone would be fine, and much easier to have with you all of the time, it's easy to get waterproof/shockproof cases for iPhones, so they must be available for some other brands too? Presumably even the cheap phone would have email capabilities if it can tether? What else do you need?

If you want a tablet, get a tablet.

If you can wait a couple of weeks, google nexus 4 is supposed to be released on 17th. For 239 sim free unlocked. From the early reviews it looks pretty much on a par with the galaxy s3 if not better and a couple of hundred quid cheaper. Personally I wouldn't bother tethering, it is a pain, and some networks don't allow it or charge more for it.

If you want a cheap phone for riding, just buy a ten quid nokia / get a mates old phone and swap the sim over. Or just buy a waterproof bag to keep it in (either a ziplock sandwich bag, or a fancy twenty quid aquapac thing).
