I think Pratchett said it best
"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy"

Pratchett? Good gods, no. It's considerably older than that, it's attributed to Dorothy Parker I believe.

Hehe (-: Point is, they're talent shows where contestants are gauged subjectively based on their performances rather than on any measureable criteria.

I know what your point was. I was just hoping that you wouldn't make it.

What has her religion got to do with anything at all? I don't get it.

Because there's a swimsuit element of the beauty pageants, and Islam requires women to dress 'modestly'. Whatever you mean by the word 'modest', dressing in a teeny bikini and gold lame heels and going on stage is not likely to fit the description.

I'm not a Muslim (have no religion) so I'm happy to be corrected if I've got the wrong end of the stick.

Doesn't Christianity require women to dress modestly too?

Mrs iDave is Iranian, shia muslim by birth, thinks religion is bollox, and thankfully is quite keen on 'immodest' clothing....

She wouldn't dream of wearing a burka nor being in a beauty pageant.

Except, she's said she'll wear a one-piece bathing suit, so it's (again) a big fuss over sod all.

I'd expect that either those two states are mutually exclusive, or it'd be a very closely run competition.

Aah read it now. So the story is, "there are religious idiots out there who don't like what some other people do".

Not really a new story is it.
