I can see this might very well go the wrong way, so can I start by saying lose the racism/islamaphobia fellas, this is not about that and theres no place for you here.
Personally I'm more than happy for this young lady to represent our country if thats what she wants to do, however I do have some issues about the old Morely cattle show.
So, Question: Is this actually simply yet another cynical PR gimic to promote an out dated concept? Seems to me like every year they dream up a new Miss World Controversy or am I too suspicious?
If its the former, surely thats a very serious matter not to mention an utter disgrace?
Hob nob?
Bikini shot?

You actually follow beauty pageants?
Is Miss Congeniality your favourite film?
I really can't see this thread ending well.
Slice of carrot cake anyone?
Lovely, Cheesy, thanks.
Any tea? Could go a nice cup of Earl Grey with a slice of lemon.
Rock bun anyone?
For some reason, that pic reminds me of this
No mention of her riding a bike.
I wouldn't vote for her.

I think you'll find that its due to the mentality of the people involved being roughly from the same era ๐
The 1970s?
That's the one ๐

Drop Dead Gorgeous instead ๐
Local lass. There's some quality comments been bounced around about this by people. "She has the right to wear what she likes, so long as we approve of it" sort of thing. I'm glad she's doing it, it brings all the racist nobheads (of all colours) out of the woodwork.
"People are attacking me, using religion as a tool, but is it really religion?"Or are you really jealous of a girl coming forward and not allowing anyone to dictate to her?
"There are people out there who want to control women," Shanna said.
Sounds like she's got the measure of a lot of poeple, to me.
I wonder if she wants world peace? ๐
Some slapper from the Midlands wanted to give herself a backstory to win the Slapper Competition and came touting her wares to NewsBeat. We went off to get a quote from some crappy religious organisation for their "opinion" so that we could suggest there was some controversy underlying this story, and they gave us more or less the same answer that the St Aloysius Sweet Mary Mother of Jesus's Eternal Suffering Sisters would have given us if we'd asked them how they felt if some Catholic bint were getting her baps out
It would be interesting if the Miss UKs had to dress like Miss Kabul for the Q&A sessions.
Never mind colour, race, religion etc, is she attractive?
Looks like she was photographed on the way in from a heavy night out ๐ฏ
i googled her...she is pretty fit
who cares, young girl wants to enter a miss good looking competition. whoopy doo. It's her choice, Religion hates every thing fun ๐ so they were bound to hate her entering.
She's very pretty though, cow. I'm never sure what I think about the Miss UK comp type things, sometimes I think it's just treating women like objects but then isn't that what some women want? Just like the World's strongest man, nothing else to them really apart from being judged on physical strength. No idea what point I'm making with this mind, I think if people want to hold a competition like that and if people want to enter or be entertained by it and its not actually doing a massive amount of harm then what's the problem. Good on her for fighting back against the morons trying to control her.
Drop Dead Gorgeous instead
I prefer Drop Dead Fred.

At the risk of achieving escape velocity and flying off tangentally; I understand the arguments against beauty contests but I really think that it's just looking for something to be outraged about.
We have plenty of quiz shows where people compete to prove they're the smartest, or who knows the most, and no-one objects to that. Athletics races see who's the fastest, or the fittest. Shall we ban the Tour De France? That's objectifying men as nothing more than cycling machines, after all.
Beauty is just another quality in humans, and I fail to see why a beauty competition is an issue when a brawn competition or memory competition isn't. For some women it's the biggest thing in their lives, and they spend loads of time and money in the pursuit of their appearance and image. Is it fair to deny them the opportunity to show off what they're good at, when everyone else gets their chance to display their talents?
Thanks for completely mis-quoting me you moron ๐
Raspberries.
I didn't mean to take it out of context quite like that - I was just referencing back to a jumping-off point rather than disagreeing with you.
EDIT - edited, is that better?
I really don't want to sound racist and I really hope the girl makes a career for herself but I'd feel that we were abandonning our heritage a bit if she was selected to represent the UK. I think most of us would expect Miss Japan and Miss China to look oriental and any of the African nations to send along black representatives.
Cougar I suppose I'll forgive you - you'd make a good rag journalist though ๐
MB I wouldn't worry to much about our heritage if I was you, well not where miss uk is concerned. just because something starts to change in our present, it doesn't take away what happened in the past. A Muslim woman representing the country at miss uk is just a sign of changing times, nothing to be scared of, really, you are quite safe
If I wasn't married.... I'd definitely tap that ๐
I'd feel that we were abandonning our heritage a bit if she was selected to represent the UK.
I agree, I think we should be sending a Roman.
Which point in time are you using as a cross section of our heritage?
I think if you asked most reasonably intelligent people around the world about the ethinicity of the UK, they would think that it was not as heavily weighted towards one race as in the other countries you mentioned (Japan and China).
I can see the point you are making, but why hang onto heritage for the sake of a beauty contest? It's about beauty, and she has that, and she's British. She meets the criteria.
I don't really see the point in comparing the UK to nations which are in the dark ages in terms of racial integration. (heh, i said "racial integration, sounds like the name of a quango!)
Mostly Balanced - is your username from having a chip on each shoulder?
mostly balanced so youre saying we should have an all white football team etc?
Firmly smacks me of engineered-tokenism. There are many attractive asian girls out there and this one isn't the best. Is it that they decided to 'push forward the competition into the future' and chose from a limited pool of candidates to make a point?
Fail IMO.
I fail to see why a beauty competition is an issue when a brawn competition or memory competition isn't.
Because one is entirely subjective, and the others are objective and measureable, maybe?
Not that I really give a toss, mind.
๐

Since when have we ever sent our best looking woman to a beauty contest though? I would certainly sleep with them all, but I wouldn't be putting in 100% effort.
I really don't want to sound racist
Well shut up, go away and don't then!
Agree. I'd aim for Silver and fall short at Bronze.

You do know that we've already had a Muslim Miss England/UK/GB (I dunno, one of them) about five years ago, don't you? Didn't cause a problem then, shouldn't cause a problem now.
I've no problem with beauty contests; I think they're daft, but as pointed out above, no more or less edifying than bodybuilding.
Is anyone else failing to spot that she's trying to be a full time model.
Her entry to this competition is nothing more than self promotion I reckon!
you'd make a good rag journalist though
You take that back! Christ, you'll be accusing me of being in Marketing next.

Perhaps she's the best one who's entered?

Ever watch the X-Factor? Dancing on Ice?

Aren't they all?
Nah cougar, I know you wouldn't stoop so low as marketing ๐ฏ
If you ask me it says more about how backward religion* is as opposed to how wrong beauty contests are. We are by nature a competitive breed, evolution has proven this, if we then decide to sub categorise this and compete against one another in specialist fields then each to their own, you with always get those who are for and those who are against this whatever this may be, as well as those who really couldnt care. If people decide to compete then they must be prepared to accept both the positive and the negative. Or may be I just have too simplistic a view on things...
As for religion I think Pratchett said it best
"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy"
As for marketing Bill Hicks hit the nail on the head
"if you work in marketing, kill yourself, this is not a joke"
