Dave Clarke was always immense - tune selection, mixing style, just everything really. When he dropped Red 2 at Atomic Jam everyone went batshit. Ade Fenton was a really under rated DJ from Jam.

Jeff Mills was frigging awesome. Only saw him once unfortunately.

Carl Cox's technique on 3 decks was insane.

If the OP wants to hunt down proper sets (none of this played on laptops malarky), look for stuff from nights or DJs who played at Atomic Jam or Final Frontier.

It used to be about dancing all night, now I listen to it whilst attempting to run and keep the middle age spread to a minimum.

Some good stuff on the Awakenings youtube channel right now from the Gashouder this year. Guaranteed to shave several minutes off your local xc lap.

"MAH" ? Que?

Someone mentioned Atomic Jam. Used to go to most of them. My mate was the VJ at Atomic Jam (and various other acid / techno nights around Brum, Wolves and Cov).

Spent many nights up on stage watching people like Jim Masters, Colin Favor, Dave Clarke, DJ Rush spin their tunes. Dave was immense to watch. A proper knob twiddler but one that actually made sounds rather than the DJs at the moment who seem to tweak every dial and slider on the mixer constantly fiddling.

Some awesome tunes and sets here, although not sure about 2unlimted 😉

This is one of my all time favourite albums and once going keeps the feet tapping and head bobbing for over an hour. Think it's track 7 or 9 where the volume increases and the other halfs start complaining 😀

Also worth checking out are the Techno Trax compilations by ZXY music. All deleted now and somewhat commercial as nearly every one has the above 2unlimited track but I'll forgive them this outrage for the brilliant rest.

Volumes 4, 6 and 13 are my favourite.

Mary Ann Hobbs

Bit of a legend, has now been supporting random underground music on national radio for about 25 years. And a really nice person to boot 🙂

Refreshing to see Mary Ann getting some love on here. Great thread echoing much of my feelings over the last year of Techno Tuesday and the Friday mixes. Paula Temple is just fantastic. I traveled all over to see Dave Clarke back in the day, saw him at 4am to 6am NY day 2000, great way to start the millennium. Was at Sankeys for that Hawtin gig, probably lost it next to you. Goosebumps just thinking about it!

Dave Clarke at Pressure in about 2003 was a great night.

Here's a broader interpretation of techno and lovely mix to go with (from twitch at optimo)

Saw Ritchie Hawtin a couple of times at Club UK in Wandsworth and was at Lost and Vapourspace every month for Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson, Maurizio etc

Was also at Sabresonic for Dave Clarke and the Dust Brothers (may have mentioned that before ;o), which was immense!

Happy days!

This is more my kinda techno, this and Weatherall's electro-y stuff. And the minimal style of Craig Richards and similar (or is that more tech house? I am way out of the loop).

Anyway, while we're talking about Optimo:

The section from about 53mins through to Don't Call is beautiful. But not much to do with the style the OP was on about. Haha.

Ooh, I just noticed an Optimo cd in the rack in front of me “Walkabout”. Starts with a bit of Throbbing Gristle... I shall play it now.

As mentioned, Dave Clarke was the boss. Jeff Mills is up there too.

Billy Nasty was the man for a good while too. Warmed up for him a couple of times and he was a really nice bloke

Oh god so many (hazy) memories.

The Que club was such an awesome venue. I'd spent 3 or 4 years clubbing all over London and still remember the holyfuucck moment I walked in the main room for the first time ... and the night when there was a power cut and stomping in unison (it felt like it anyway) until the tunes came on... and the night they had the dwarf Elvis tossing with nurses in rubber outfits...

Also had many a good night when Billy Nasty properly leathered it. Steve Mason was amazing at Club UK.

well, im (very) slowly trying some of your suggestions thanks, picking my moments when the house is empty, just me and the poor dog.

early thoughts are that i may not actually be that much into techno after all, just the 'hardcore' (for want of a better word) techno.

some of what ive listened to over the last couple of days has been a bit tame for me i must admit, which pleases me as it means i havent got an overwhelming amount of stuff to listen to. it makes it easy if theres only 1 or 2 artists that i like 😀
the stuff that has yer common and garden 2 unlimited type sounds doesnt do it for me at all, but those paula temple mixes are just astounding. i think someone up there ^^^ described them as 'brutal' and i cant think of a better adjective for them. ace.

im struggling to find stuff on deezer tho, im having to open this thread, click the links, then cast them to my 'chromecast audio' which isnt ideal. and that 6 music PT mix will have disappeared from bbc sounds in a few weeks which is a shame.

thanks for all your suggestions, i will eventually get round to trying them all.

cheers

Billy Nasty was everywhere in London during my mid-90s heyday. His style was about as hard as my tastes went in techno. And I always liked a good dose of acid (the 303, not the tabs) with it.

One memory I do have is hearing him play Flash by Green Velvet in a basement club on Oxford Street (near Tott Ct Rd, but I could never find again), it was the first time I'd heard it and the place went off with loads of jaws dropped.

blimey dez, thats disturbing 😀 tried listening in the car but it lost connection. a quick flick through it tho suggests its not my bag really, but the videos er.... interesting 😀

thought id cut the middle man out and see what paula temple stuff is on deezer. listened to an album but didnt like it as much as her mixes.

still working my way through suggestions, so thanks for keeping them coming.

Looking forward to checking some of this stuff out, I started dabbling when looking for some turbo tunes (inspired by other threads on here) but it's becoming my go-to running music and also my go-to for when I need to churn out some tedious CAD work.

I don't know if 'minimal' is a recognised style, but this is more my type of stuff, metronomic! 😀

Off to dig out my Fabric CDs...

No I just had rave/techno/acid/bleep/rap/hip-hop/triphop/house/ambient-house parties in my bedroom mostly on my own 🙁

Went to several raves around late '91 to 93 they were pretty ace. Been to a few clubs over the years, but none I ever found as exciting or enjoyable, though to be fair they just crap clubs.

Techno is still going strong here in Berlin, part of what makes it special here is the real culture around the dancing and dancers (there are even different sub styles you often see in panorama bar vs berghain) unlike almost anywhere else in the world which adds a LOT to the party - it becomes an improvised techno ballet at its best and dancers are given room center stage.

Ooh loved Stay Up Forever back in the day. Used to go to Choci’s Chewns in St Anne’s Court to listen/buy records... might dust them off this afternoon and annoy the kids.
