[#11557000]

got to say ive enjoyed some of the stuff that mary ann hobbs has been playing lately on 6 music, in fact really emjoyed it, especially cranked up so the walls are shaking. 'techno tuesday' and the 'friday mix' i think. the sounds that ive enjoyed most seem to have been by paula temple?

now i know nothing about techno, or even whether some of these mixes even qualify as techno or some other label, but as MAH calls it that ill go with it.

its a genre that has largely passed me by, i liked stuff like 'dominator' by human resource and LA styles 'james brown is dead' back in the day, but dont even know if thats classed as techno either.

so...... as i seem to like the stuff paula temple puts out, tell me more about 'techno' and what else i may like along the same sort of lines. the louder/faster/ more'drum'n'bassier the betterer.

Mary Ann Hobbs has totally won me over. I used to be irritated by her husky waffling about how magical and mystical everything is but she turns up and goes hard every day. She'd be sacked on the spot from every other radio station in the country for some of the hideous noise she plays.

That techno mix yesterday was amazing. I think it was that Paula Temple up there^. If I can work out how to listen again on the app I'll do that.

Everyone likes to whinge about 6 buy I'm really going to miss it when all the regular Joes come back to work and insist on Magic FM or whatever.

Dave Clarke & Ben Sims are the best DJs I've seen play live, older stuff will be faster and heavier than more up to date sets but loads on soundcloud

Dave Clarke is immense - seen him numerous times. His work rate behind the decks is off the scale and his musical knowledge and tune selection just epic.

Recommend World Service 1 and 2 as a starting point...

i thought id heard 2 great mixes from her on 6 music, but reading that link, its just a repeat of the first one 🙂

Been listening to techno non-stop since about '95 and never got bored of it. My kids think I'm very sad though and all my mates who used to be fans have become a bit snobbish about it. Apparently 4/4 beats are formulaic and repetitive. I couldn't care less quiite frankly 🙂

Had this on repeat recently..

There’s a Spotify playlist of the Paula Temple essential mix if that’s of any use:

Loads of other Essential Mix playlists too.

I don't 100% know if its the stuff you are after but some of the Fear N Loathing mixes on Youtube are very good (I use them when Zwift racing for background music, it doesn't make me any faster but I need all the help I can get)

Worth having a look at the music released on the Klockworks label. I went to one of their nights at Berghain and it was brilliant - Sterac and DVS1 blew me away.

Techno has never been my favourite, but a lot of it still gets me dancing. More of a jungle and DnB fan.

Mary Ann has long been a favourite on 6.

I always listen to techno Tuesday but this week she played some face meltingly hard d n b which took me back to the mid nineties.its been great to get reacquainted with the day time schedule now I'm WFH

The only downer is Steve lamaq playing britpop classix and idles at 4pm. He played hazel o Connor a few weeks ago . Just weird

**** me, that Paula Temple mix posted by DezB is brutal.

Always preferred the mid-tempo stuff myself, but respect is due for a banging mid-life crisis OP.

Been listening to techno non-stop since about ’95...

Another one bookmarked for tomorrow’s afternoon session, love the acid techno sound and spent many a night at 414

spent many a night at 414

We used to pop there in the mornings, or was it the afternoons? After the fridge and the fridge bar.

414 always had a youth club vibe,I thought.

If you want a good history lesson, you can't do better than Jim Masters' Essential Mix from 1999. Utterly flawless summary of 90s techno.

Techno is a term that has become a catch all term but for me it will always relate to Detroit and that sound

This Amit session straddles techno and dnb, and was featured on Mary Anne Hobbs show about fifteen years ago

Late starts usually, went on to around 6 or 7am then moved to upstairs only until whenever? Don’t think we ever stopped long enough to get kicked out but had some late finishes!

I don’t remember it being a youth club though I would’ve been early 20’s I probably wouldn’t have cared.

Nuclear Free Zone or Optimist Creed (when we fancied a lighter night) among others I’ve forgotten. Slightly different to Zero Gravity nights and the like though that’s to be expected.

Anyhoo, still love a bit of techno from time to time...

I'm into Ellen Alien mixes - some of her lockdown stuff from her Berlin appartment has been great. She's also 53!

Her own stuff is also great

Bob, I've been searching for that link since it was posted on the Slamevents forum about 15years ago - superb!!

For some brutally hard techno also look at Surgeon and Ancient Methods, especially mixes from about 15years ago.

Similar era to me. I meant the decor and the "tuck shop" feel of the bar was a bit like a youth club.

I think this mix from aeons ago is my favorite Surgeon mix as it's a lot more varied than what he normally plays

I don't remember that but it sounds like a recipe for chaos. Especially once the ket arrived.

Back of the downstairs room by the bar, it was tiny...used to go the long way around just to avoid it!

One of my favourites - Misstress Barbara Essential Mix. I love that era of loopy, sample-heavy tunes, fast mixing, often on 3 decks, slight hip-hop influence. Ben Sims is the king of that sound but I always loved this mix:

Same era: Hawtin live at Sankeys. I went to this on my own, got a pill from somewhere or other, lost the plot on the dancefloor and ended up at some random house with no clue how to get home. Happy days. I note now that it was late April in my final year of university. No wonder I came out with a Desmond...
