Anybody had one? Towing ability? 7 seater practicality? Reliability?

I have seen a V8 Petrol jobbie for not a lot of cash and I'm very tempted, should I be????

Memory suggests older ones were built in the states and did horrible things to MB's reputation for reliability and quality.

Try Honest John for a review.

V8 Petrol! Hope you don't drive many miles or you'll soon become very friendly with your local fuel station.

I only get about 22 ish out of the diesel 4x4 I have now.
The figure on autotrader is 21mpg for the Merc.
As for miles driven, about 7k a year at most, so would it be worth getting the 2.7 Diesel engine M class and paying the extra £1,000? I think the figure quoted for those is 27mpg

According to our local Mercedes specialist they eat brake pads and disks. Not surprising really given the weight of the beast.

I've had a 2008 ML320cdi for just over 2 year. Very pleased with it. Extremely comfortable, fast and pulls like nothing I've had before. But of course, that's the diesel V6, the petrol V8 will be far less economical. I get well over 30mpg on long runs, I think my overall is just under 25mpg
I would pay the extra for the diesel, it just soooo torquey. Pulls a heavy horse trailer and a big horse up the hills around here as if its not there, where the Jeep 2.3CRD we had before was changing down and crawling. And the 7 speed auto box is very good as well - a very occasional clunky change slowing down at very low speeds but otherwise smooth and unobtrusive.
Over 20k miles in 2 years, one set of front pads only.
I think the previous model (2005 and previous) was more problematic.
I'd thoroughly recommend the car, but I wouldn't have a petrol engine.

regards
Colin

If you are talking about the older M class. Walk then break into a run (away).

Some of these may help though from actual owners http://www.whatcar.com/car-reviews/used/mercedes-benz/m-class-4x4/readers-reviews/23520-3

Latest gen M class is supposed to be really really good compared.

Not sure where you live, but you'd fit in great commuting on the A4 into West London with the rest of them every morning...

I'd be very very very surprised if you got anything like 21mpg out of one. I'd imagine between 10 & 15 would be more realistic on a day to day basis, unless you only ever drive it on a motorway at a steady 50 without other traffic.

Early ones were made of chocolate.

They eat Springs, discs and drive shafts. Bits fall off them like old Discos' used to be like and they're expensive to fix.

Makes me wonder why you're tempted? Oh, the possibility that it's cheap.. I wonder why.

I bought one new 18 months ago, 350 CDi and I think it's great. Was a big shift for me as I had previously owned performance cars, but wanted something more practical for biking & skiing.
Travelled to the alps and back several times in it. It hasn't missed a beat, surprisingly fun to drive at times and is well build etc etc. Still on the same set of tyres and pads. The only thing it has cost me is petrol and road tax since I have owned it.
Thinking of getting the AMG version when I change soon!
