So apparently she was baptised with holy water from the river Jordan.

So that's all good then.  😇

New Cockney rhyming slang for drunk?

"Yeah, mate .....I was proper Meghaned on Saturday night "

It's only a matter of time, you mark my words.

I know who this woman is because I see her face on the front of tabloid newspapers and I see that she is marrying one of your exalted and beloved royal family, but beyond that I have no clue as to who or what she is.

I’m quite keen on her. She’s apparently outspoken and the fact that the Daily Heil/Express dislike her is something I approve of.

She's the woman Prince Harry is marrying. You know who Prince Harry is right?

Heck even the most ardent anti-royalist has to like Prince Harry.

I think you miss the point about how at least this anti royalist thinks. Harry seems a decent enough person, so did his mum. Doesnt make the concept of royalty any better.

The alternatives aren't all that attractive either, of course. Out of even the most egalitarian societies, a figure and his/her family and his/her associate families will inevitably arise. Think the USA and its political elite, and perhaps more poignantly, its entertainment elite. In the latter instance, you have inherited privilege of a worse sort than our Royal Family. In the latter instance, they at least have social responsibility.

We could just get rid of them, well the royalness bit. Obviously nothing much would change as they dont really do much anyway. I just think they are the poster boys and girls for social inequality. Dont need to replace pointless figureheads with anything. Pointing out that other countries are ****ed up too doesnt make any difference.

Can we add “What’s your point caller” to all the other lazy piss poor responses that get censored/filtered by the forum?

I struggle with long sentences to any responses 🙂

She's a mixed background American divorcee and is just what the Royals need. She's even had a proper job. Good lass.

Really? For us the alternative is "Don't have a royal family"

So if you don’t have a crown as head of state, you replace it with an ostensibly elected president. And you replace the ‘court’ with other privileged unelected officials. It’s called human nature.

And in any event, the idea that the crown in and of itself necessarily represents or leads to social inequality is tosh. Canada shares the same crown, and is one of the least classist places in earth. Well, aside from Sweden, Norway, and the Netherlands. And they’re all monarchies as well.

All the Scandinavian countries have royal families and yet they are some of the happiest and most equal societies on earth. I'm no royalist but I don't blame them for equality.

Just an occasional reminder that Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands all have greater wealth inequality that the UK based on GINI coefficients.

Why bother?

And in any event, the idea that the crown in and of itself necessarily represents or leads to social inequality is tosh.

I think its pretty unarguable that they do represent inherited social inequality on a massive scale, they are the poster boys and girls for a lack of social mobility, you second point is fair though.

BillMC/Mefty,

1) it’s Gini (lower case) named after the person that invented it, not an acronym.

2) Netherlands and Sweden are both great examples of its limitations as a useful or indeed misleading measure of overall equality/inequality.

It took me four minutes to find that out. How awkward.

An occasional reminder that the gini coefficient doesn’t measure wealth inequality.

She’s an actress, a normal person, with a normal background and a proper career, and quite a successful one too.

The fact that you are so keen to tell everyone that you don’t know who (or what?) she is is quite strange really.

Its a bit like those bobbers that present not to know what Facebook is  🙄

Is she on Facebook? Not that I’d know, I hardly even know what Facebook is. Somebody that uses twitter (not that I know what that is either) told me she’s an actor that is marrying someone famous called Harry, but I don’t know who he is either. I don’t even know what forum I’m posting on. What’s a forum?

"Heck even the most ardent anti-royalist has to like Prince Harry."

Grudgingly, and only because he looks more like the bodyguard than Charles.

I am aware of Prince Harry, yes. Beyond that I have no idea what he does, and I am at a loss as to why anyone would have to like him. If he was to star in his own reality tv show like Keeping up with the Kardashians then I might be able to get a batter sense of how he spends his time and what kind of person he is but without that I don't have a clue.

I learned a lot more about Meghan Merkel from this thread than I did previously. Did she star in anything good?

Source is here  https://www.equalitytrust.org.uk/scale-economic-inequality-uk

There are two Gini coefficients - one for income, one for wealth, we have greater income inequality and less wealth inequality than the countries mentioned - the interesting question is whether the two are related.
