[Closed] Mathematics refresher textbook recommendations please

So, on the back of taking a mathematics course I’d like to refresh your pure and applied mathematics knowledge beforehand. You know, swot up and the like.

I have some mathematics background but it was a long time ago. Are there any textbooks STW would recommend please? I’d like something with worked examples and a fair number of exercises to get my eye in.

I’m trying to stay away from online courses for now.

Please and thank you.

In a similar situation I got in touch with my old sixth form and asked if they had any out-of-date textbooks that they could spare.  Ended up having a coffee with my old maths teacher and left with an entire course of slightly battered pure / stats / mechanics textbooks.

EdExcel apparently change the course fairly often, and he had hundreds of books stuffed into a box under his desk that he was trying to get rid of.

For the applied side of things Stroud's Engineering Mathematics (followed up with Advanced Engineering Mathematics) were the default intros when I was an undergrad.

Try find the C1,2,3 maths books on amazon market place. I'm currently working through the MU123 OU course from books I bought on there, think I paid a tenner for all 4 books and most of that was postage, most books were 1p and in excellent condition.

@Flaperon I'll see if I can get some old textbooks.

@jolmes do you have a link to any of those books please?

@elliptic I think I have that book somewhere. But it's probably easier to order a new one than find it!

Stroud is pretty much the standard, but it really does depend on where you want to go with it. A more left-field suggestion (from my own discipline) is The Chemistry Maths Book by Erich Steiner. The chemistry content is pretty minimal and covers many useful topics. Disclaimer, I'm a theoretical chemist, so the book definitely appeals to me.

There's a lot of good (free) resources at  http://mathcentre.ac.uk  assuming you can get past the ancient web design (and videos for iPods).

I did look into Khan Academy, but I don't want to rely on a screen.

Looks like I'll be digging out my copy of Stroud at some point.

Stroud was the book I had in university that I wished I had for 6th form, might well dig out a copy since I have spent my last few months doing the GSSE maths course with kids and about to move to A levels

This search has made me remember that Glyn was the textbook I had back in the day. That was not great. I’ll be purchasing a copy of Stroud soon. Thanks for all the responses.

May even treat myself to a copy of Bostock and Chandler while I’m here.

Stroud is great. The explainations always clicked with me better than in other text books.

Love a maths worksheet. Anyone wants to set some STW maths homework?

@ElShalimo I've also ordered the S1 book from the same series @jolmes referenced.

@docgeoffyjones why not. Maybe we can start with the first chapter in Stroud and work our way up from there?
