Heading out to Madeira in three weeks at Easter for a week of relaxing.
One elderly member of the party has found out about the Dengue fever outbreak (spread by mosquitoes, 2500 locals and 200 Euro travellers reported cases) late last year and is starting to get cold feet. Numbers of reported cases have tailed off dramatically since January but we're trying to work out our way forwards.
Anyone heard of Dengue? Or had it?
I went to madeira earlier this year, got bitten didn't get dengue.
Also been to puerto rico during a dengue outbreak, just was extra vigilant about avoiding insect bites. Not 100% successful but as far as i'm aware there's not much you can do. Risks of dengue in a developed country greatly reduced
I know 3 that got it in French Guiana. Think it's one of those things that comes and goes. All 3 got it about the same time. We were all there for 2 months at a time though, with work, not a 1 week holiday.
Usual precautions - cover up, wear repellent, and if you get any fever symptoms the go straight to the clinic. Think in FG it was the mzzies that bit during the daytime that carry Dengue fever, rather than the evening ones (that was what we were told).
edit: oh and the hotel probably sprays every 1-2 days, to keep the numbers of skeeters down.
are you an insect magnet? some people just seem to attract mozzies/ midgies.
