In the gym at lunch, flexing to make all the laydeez and gay guyz go wild as usual. After I finished the gun show I moved onto my dead lifts On my 5th rep, for what ever reason, my form went to shit with the net result being me trying to jerk 100kg up with my lower back.
Cue loads of pain and that instant realisation something is not right. Came home and since then have been icing it and taking ibuprofen. Going to wait till tomorrow to see whether its better or worse, and decide then whether to go docs or walk in centre.
In the meantime, and to make me worry more, how do I know if I have herniated a disc? Symptoms include embarrassment, dull throbbing pain in the lower back, pain bending in all directions, sitting and weird feeling, not quite pain, going down to the glutes/buttock area.

Dammit! That is a perfect match to my symptoms ๐
Thanks anyway, Doctor.
Is that the same as a prolapse? I've 2 of them and they were only found after having a CT or MRI (can't quite remeber which) scan after years of pain. If you start getting stabbing pains in your legs / feet or numbness thats a symtom I get with it.
Maybe just a pulled muscle though hopefully.
Could also be a torn muscle though, with the other muscles cramping up to compensate. Give it a few days of rest and see if it improves at all.
Repeated bending in the same direction will worsen a disc injury, repeated extension will ease it. It may ease off a muscular injury though.
What age are you?
Not a doctor, and the standard advice is if in doubt, get it checked out.
But have had injuries similar to how yours sounds on several occasions - my lumbar muscles would go into spasm and I was unable even to get up from the floor.
The last time it happened was after I got hit by a van and the hospital thought I'd broken my back. It really feels/looks like a far worse injury than it actually is. What I found worked for me was to try to lie still (not much else I was physially able to do!) and rest for about 24h. take painkillers/NSAIDs/ibuprofen gel/hot water bottles and anything that helps.
At that point you are just about up to visiting a physio or sports massage person to get a good massage and start to rehabilitate the area. I wouldnt try going to a physio any sooner as you'll struggle to walk and it will just hurt too much. You need to let it calm down a bit. Ditto the walk-in centre, sitting there in agony and getting prodded probably isnt what you need right now.
I'm guessing if it feels slightly better in the morning its not a herniated disc?
But if you have got what I've had, it will hurt for a good while and you won't be doing anything other than hobbling about for at least a week. Depending on your fitness level you'll recover fully in 2-4 weeks.
Tips for prevention (I've found) are keeping fit (running/circuit training) and good posture
Hope that helps! Good luck.

Feeling better in the morning would suggest a damaged disc.
Jamie - I would ditch the ice idea and put a hot pack on it, or a hot waterbottle. The idea being that it'll reduce any spasm that you have in your muscles.

Well, there is something to look forward to finding out tomorrow then ๐
