To avoid the biscuit tin for a mid afternoon snack (and as the weather's turning) i'm going to start getting some cup a soups to keep in my drawer at work.
Had a look in the supermarket today and they all seem to have really high levels of salt or fat.

Anyone got any "healthy" options?

Want something sachet based that can just sit in my drawer for weeks on end if needed and await to be eaten as I don't generally snack every day. Something warming and under 200cals.

Could be 4 or 5g of salt in a "full fat" stock cube Ton - I'd be knocking that on the head quick sharp!

OP - if you want something that will last for ages, it's almost certainly going to be jam packed with preservatives - salt most likely. And MSG.

I really like the Ainsley Harriott cupasoups, hot and sour flavour is very good, another option is a porridge cup with some dried fruit etc thrown in.

woody, my cardiologist told me no salt is as bad as too much salt.
so I reckon you would be safe with a bit of oxo.

No salt is bad Ton, you'd die. So from that respect, yes, none is as bad as too much!

If you're using a whole cube in a mug, it's WAY too much.

I usually have a Mug-shot noodle or pasta thing.

However you need to check the pack if you want under 200cal as they can range from 170-270.

If Google results are to be believed, there's 0.33g of salt per 100ml of made up stock in an OXO cube (and they also do reduced salt ones). I expect it's be quite difficult to not get enough salt in a typical (convenient) Western diet.

There's nothing inherently wrong with MSG, despite what scaremongering posts on Facebook might have you believe.

Hm.

http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=272080228

Typical values per 100ml of stock as prepared

Sodium 0.26g
Salt equivalent 0.65g

And of course, in the great tradition of food labelling lies an OXO cube makes 200ml, so the actual figure per cube is twice that.

The missus has Mug-Shots when she needs a snack. I think they vary as to whether they actually taste what they are meant to taste of though.

Oxo cube IS salt with fillers, colour and flavour.

Cup-a-Soup is based on maltodextrin powder with colour and flavour. Maltodextrin is the same pure carbohydrate that is used in energy powders like SIS.

Yup I second that, I keep them in my drawer for same reason as you OP, the spicy flavour seems to stop me craving something badder!

Make it from scratch the night before and warm it up at work? is that an option?

My missus boiled the remains of Sundays large roast chicken, to make a soup stock/base, combined that with the remaining picked chicken meat, some sweetcorn and noodles ...

I had that for lunch nuked in a microwave soup mug, it was pretty good and very filling...

Probably not "Low Salt" but she didn't use any extra stock cubes or anything, so I guess that's really the only way to control the salt content of a soup, make the thing completely from scratch... Instant powdered or tinned soups will always be full of salt...
