Saw something similar happen to a D-Type Jag at Silverstone once.
After it looked like the driver was ok the bloke sat next to me started laughing and rubbing his hands together. His mate asked him why. "I do all the body work on that one!"

What happened to it, seems a lot of damage in all places? Or is that just what happens to cars from that era?

When watching the race it was strange. Going into the fast left hander it just suddenly jumped into the air and started a corner to corner barrel roll. A bit like a stunt car when the fire the log out the bottom to make them flip over.
Looking at it on the trailer I noticed the shiny bit in the middle of the hub on the only missing wheel. Looks like something snapped so the wheel came off causing the wheel to come off.
I never even noticed the wheel come off during the crash itself. I guess I was looking up at the car while the disconnected wheel was on the ground.
That is my post race forensic analysis anyway

nooooo..!? There was one in Callander the other day, LD and I were admiring while loading up canoes in a layby - lovely things. The noise was not what mini_LD expected from an 'old grandpa car'..!

There are two MK1s on Carandclassic.co.uk. One at £57,500 and one at £58,000. One of them is a pre-airflow model with the alloy panels and A frame rear suspension. Yum.
If that was the left-hander at the end of Revett Straight then I can see why a wheel hub failure would cause so much damage - it is a very fast entry.
Had the immense honour (and terror) to be instructed there by the late great Gerry Marshall. The honour is obvious, the terror was that we were in a 5 litre TVR and he was picking the braking point.

I saw a motorbike (BSB meeting) jump the fencing and end up in the crowd at Thruxton. No serious injuris, just a few broken limbs if I recall correctly.
It just didn't look as "stoved in" on the roof as the rolled cars I've seen before. That and I was assuming it'd just slid off and bounced along a tyre wall.
A friend of mine rolled my prized e30 in my yoof, that I was letting drive whilst he was fettling it.
I was advised by other friends not to see the car due to state of it (everyone was fine).
I instead spent an hour picking up remnants from the crash scene late at night and bagging them up. I still have the bag somewhere!

Go to a historic rally and you'll see loads of £100k cars rolled into balls of scrap, a lot worse than that sadly. Trees don't give much.
A family friend has one of those. It's race prepped and very lovely. It's part of his collection of very fast fords.
I sometimes used to get a lift to work in one back in the early 70's, you could hear it coming long before you could see it. I had to get my timing right though, if I was too early I risked the tit with the Reliant Supervan seeing me first.

iirc, the old ford axles were "fully floating". ie if a half shaft fails, there's nothing to keep the wheel bearing / hub attached?
The damage to that 'Tina breaks my heart!
Still, the whole point of owning those is to use them, and that doesn't mean fannying around driving in a procession.

My neighbours son had one of those and has just bought a Mk1 Escort RS2000 so the Savage may be up for grabs if it hasn't gone yet.
I'd love either a Chevette HS2300, or a Sunbeam Talbot Lotus. Basically the same engine, as I understand it, the only difference was the Lotus version had an alloy block instead of cast iron. 16 valve version put out 135bhp, and there was a long-stroke competition motor, could put out 230-odd bhp.
Masses of torques, great in a small hatchback...
In the early 80's I had an alfa 1600 GT Junior, and a mate of mine and I nearly bought a GTA Stradale (for £9000 iirc) together, but didn't manage to get it sorted. It would be worth up to £150k now

My brother had a complete restoration done on one last year. Not only does it look gorgeous it's unbelievably fast, genuinely a racer for the road (the door panels are so thin, for example, you'd dent them if you pushed on them to shut a door)

Countzero - I had a one of the original 400 Chevette HS's, road and stage rallied it in the 80's, early 90's. Great fun although it only produced about 170bhp at it's peak. Sold it on when I couldn't afford to continue motorsport. I saw it on another rally about a year later, going well in the morning and in the afternoon on a trailer without a straight panel, I suspect that was the end of a great car ... sad day !
Stub axle looks like it's snapped. Damn !

First car I owned in 1978 was a Lotus Cortina. I was moving on from motor biking and needed something with a bit of go. I guess I should have kept it !
Core- my brother had a series 1 Fulvia 1.3 Rallye S in great condition at the same time I had my Junior, it was a wonderfully delicate and precise thing to drive.

My suggestion would be that half shaft/axle shaft/drive shaft snapped on corner entry which then caused the roll over and subsequent damage 😥 I know I would be crying if it was mine!
I've got a fair bit of experience with those 'English' front loading axles and the half shafts on them have been known to break... The thing that surprises me a little is it looks like they are standard size, there is a few people that make much stronger ones (yes they cost a few quid) but if you can afford to race an LC on the circuits I would have though you might put some decent half shafts in it, I bet there is a slipper diff between the shafts...

That agrees with my thoughts. When it happened the car launched upwards but the wheel was still on the ground, or at least I didn't see the wheel going upwards
