What dirtyboy said.

I'm lucky enough to be just up the road near Usk, which is lovely.

Plenty of nice places around, and Cardiff is a great city if you'd rather not be rural.

Newport's fairly dire though...

It may be dire, but it is surrounded by some fabulous land, towns, and villages.

Take a look at Caerleon by way of example.

You'll also be needing a track bike.

I am a valley boy from just above the port, some brilliant riding all over but lets concentrate on where to live.

Newport is as rough as in certain places and I couldnt recommend anywhere in town unless you can afford the Ridgeway area.

Caerleon over priced and lets be honest a bit of a dump, lived in the High Street for 5 years before I get shot down. Really noisy at night The Bull being a magnet for all sorts getting on the pop before going to town. Worst chippy in the world as well. Could of changed but doubt it. Cwmbran is awful

Out towards Usk is gorgeous but expensive and the trip into work can be awful.

I would go looking at Rogerstone Risca Abercarn valley, Has the train and some really nice bits. I wouldnt go further up that Newbridge but that is just my prejudice 😆

Cwmfelin side of Crosskeys is ok as well and an off road commute to Newport.

Valleys take some time to get your head around but the people are ok and petty friendly.

The house next door to me is going for that sort of money but it's central, Victorian 3 story terrace, 5 bedrooms, balcony, 2 lounge, breakfast room, 2 lofts, cellar, off street parking, nicely done as well.

😉

I was born in Usk but wouldn't want to live there now - too isolated as a non-driver. Quite happy in the 'port having spent time in Chesterfield and then another 10 years just outside Cheltenham. Plenty of good riding nearby and it's a cracking little city for BMX cruising too with enough hills to make it interesting and plenty of nooks, crannies, alleys, etc, to explore. It'll be great once it's finished 😆

With that kind of budget you should be laughing, also look up the valley from Newport past Machen towards Bedwas.

Schrick is that up in Fields Park area?

Handpost-ish.

It is a bit of a dump but it's very well located and I'm happy here. Links to good riding in both direction up the canal, Machen and lots of natural riding elsewhere, lots of nice small towns and villages within easy reach, the Beacons up, Afan down the M4, Cardiff and Brizzle either side, lots of kebab houses, there used to be more pubs per square mile in Newport than anywhere else in the world and last but not least Cwmbran shopping centre has ample free parking
