The other week we were in London. Drove down on the Thursday and used the Dartford crossing southbound and paid the fee no problem. On the way back on the Monday, made the return crossing and paid the fee. But now we've got a penalty notice, rather than using the Dartford crossing Northbound like I thought we had, would make sense to me that we used the same one, we had actually used the Blackwall tunnel. It's a £90 penalty if paid within 14 days. Does my ignorance of London transport count for anything here? I've emailed my reasons, any chance of leniency?

Probably not.
There are enough signs when entering London area about the zone and payment.
There's a big difference between the Dartford crossing and the Blackwall tunnel..... About 15 miles difference....!
If you were inside the M25 you're already liable for the ULEZ....
Drove the old van into central London and several months later ended up with a really poorly worded letter sent to my address in Germany basically saying next time you'll pay.... And that despite the motor being Euro 4.
The Dartford crossing is free from 22:00-6:00.

That's quite a spectacular diversion, I assume you were simply following the satnav?!
Blackwall and Sivertown tunnels are both tolled between 06.00 and 22.00, it's £4 for a car. Since you were inside the ULEZ zone, it's worth checking to see if you were fined for that (and/or Congestion Charge) as well.
