I knew some devout Christians that got upset (not violently) over this film and there again I knew some Christians who still find it really funny.

Maybe the comparison isn't correct as I haven't seen it but should there be such a violent reaction to the film "Innocence of Muslims"?

It seems to be such a over reaction without any rationale - why would Islam (a peaceful religion) respond like it is?

Is it more than just this film?

Genuinely curious and wanting to be educated here, nothing more.

There shouldn't be, but it is predictable. There was a thread a couple of days ago about the film. Consensus is people are fuelling the flames from both sides.

Islam is not a homogenised mass and has its extremist nutjobs just as there are in other religions.

it's less about religion, more an outburst of the sense of humiliation over the treatment of various countries by the west (and by west I mean the American hegemony).

Well I'm deeply offended by the comparison of that awful youtube parp to the holy and truly reverend Life of Brian. I'm just nipping to by some pebbles and some nice round stones to throw through your windows. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Why the comparison with the Life of Brian ?

Was Life of Brian produced by anti-Christians who wanted to provoke Christians, insult them, and create an atmosphere of fear and hate ?

If so I must of missed it.

Hi ernie, as I mentioned I haven't seen it so the comparison is wrong - my apologies.

I hope I don't meet any easily offended extremist Christians wearing my Chuck 'Last Snack' t-shirt

Sadly some religious zealots take things rather too seriously and personally. Having said that this film does seem to have been made purely to offend.

Ernie's spot on... Life of Brian wasn't conceived solely to upset/inflame people, it did it as a side effect. Whereas Innocence's entire purpose is to piss off muslims (though ironically, the bits I watched were unintentionally hilarious, it's like watching Sunset Beach or something)

So Catholicism is right with the times then eh?

I wonder where the major centre of learning, knowledge and science was right up until the Crusaders torched it all? Bonus points for not guessing "Skegness". We owe Arab scholars a huge deal for our understanding of planetary physics, medicine, poetry and mathematics.

Basically it goes like this. In the west people don't go ape because they have something to lose - good job, the house, Audi, wife.

In the middle east generally the average joe has nothing to lose, pissing off people with nothing to lose is like poking a dragon.

The whole multiple wives thing also doesn't help with alleviating male aggression if the marriage ratios are screwed up (as I believe they are in a few of the mid east countries).

Actually, I don't know anything about 'thread subject,' but how is it different from 'some other controversial thing entirely'?

Was it Chapel St Leonards then ?

What I meant was that islam was founded several hundred years after baby jesusism and so, if christianity's any sort of a benchmark for religious nuttery-inspired violence, Islam may be just due its turn, having been buggered up by Rome in its infancy

Plus ca change...

Might even get some witch trials in before about 2212 ๐Ÿ˜•

people aren t rioting and murdering because of a 15 minute trailer for a film thats on youtube. thier simply using it as an excuse for rioting against a group/ groups they dislike.

syrians arent rioting because their own army is killing hundreds in thier homes. but locally others are rioting because 8 women were killed allegedly by usa troops in another country....

I'm looking forward to the point in the no-doubt near future where slightly disaffected Muslims decide to have a bit of fun, and poke fun at their own religion, and make the Life of Ahmed

I doubt it's that simple, probably some moderate Muslims have rules akin to some moderate Christians, and the more extreme elements have their stricter versions.

Chances are none of them bear up to much scrutiny when compared to what the Quaran or Bible say anyway. Bit like most relegions that rely on "the word of god" literally.

Doubt it, medieval Europe was quite hot on blasphemy, and afaik the Bible hasn't changed significantly since then.

Religiously, the answer's still no. "Thou shalt not blaspheme" etc...

Legally, I suspect Sharia law is more closely related to the Qur'an than modern western law is to the Christian teachings of the Bible that most are based loosely upon. That still makes no difference to how you'd feel about blasphemy though if you were a fanatical Christian.

For example, you're not allowed to make a picture of the Prophet, are you? You can draw pictures of Jesus though.

I am, its only muslims aren't allowed to draw pictures of him... this small detail does get lost in the hysteria...
