Recommendation request of the day:
Moved into a new house in January and it has a large sloping lawn. Actually three of them, the first fairly flat and easy to deal with, the second 25m x 5m with maybe a 10 degree slope across its width, and the third only 3m x 5m but with a 30 degree slope down its length.
Up until now I’ve been using an old Flymo Turbo Lite 250 which was perfect for the tiny lawn at my old place. Now it’s taking me over two hours to cut the new lawns with it I’m hoping for a better solution.
Any ideas?
It either needs to be ultra light so I can drag it up and down the slopes without killing myself or have powered wheels while still being manoeuvrable. Prefer electric over petrol.
Maybe I should just get a sheep!
A self-propelled one will be quite heavy so, although it will be good for driving up the slope, it will be hard to manoeuvre. Perhaps a decent battery mower would be best? Lighter than a petrol mower but it would depend on how big the first lawn is?...
These ones get quite good reviews
Keep the flymo for the small one, get a bigger one for the other 2.
Should be easy enough to keep it on track across a 10 degree slope?
Out of interest, why does it take 2 hours?
A steal at £17,000 🙂
Self propelled petrol I'd say, you can pick a mountfield or Honda up second hand quite cheaply
We've got a pretty steep lawn in places and have a battery Viking (Stihl) mower. Seems to work pretty well on the slope. Its not very heavy. It's quite small so would take a while for a big area. We are leaving quite a bit to go natural and encourage wild flowers and bees, which is way easier than mowing but still looks nice IMO. The mower is nice and quiet too. Having spent a big chunk of the weekend listening to one neighbour or the other with their petrol mowers this is a nice feature.
Have you not thought about a robot mower? If you have a large garden like we do just the amount of grass cuttings was getting out of hand. We have one from Gardena and so far it has been faultless. The mulching as well as being good for the grass also means no more mass grass cutting to eat rid of. The set up was pretty easy and it took me a day to lay all the guiding cables around the garden and everything worked first time to my amazement! Some brands have specialized machines for rough/ steep gardens but they can get a bit pricey.
As nickjb says - leave it au naturale, not going to be playing crocket on that slope!
Sorry - appreciate that's a completely unhelpful answer!
Self propelled petrol lawnmower, I moved house last year. Wish I had bought one years ago!
Handles steep bank easily, even when I slipped and fell on my arse yesterday.
Get one with a mulching facility too.
Gardener I worked for once said he had a steep lawn / bank he had to do a while back and used a Flymo on a rope. Walked along the top and let the top out every row. Not so much for the 10deg but the 30deg would work.
My back garden Has a pretty steep slope for the bottom 1/4 nearest the patio, I use a Bosch battery mower and it’s been great.
I’ve head all of the other types (petrol rotary/petrol cylinder/push cylinder/flymo/cable electric) and this is the best, almost as light as an electric, easier to push than a flymo and no cable to run over or get annoyed by.
If I had a bigger garden I’d still have a battery one, I’d just get a bigger one, atco do a really nice looking one that should do a pretty big garden without much fuss.
Used to use a petrol flymo when I was a lad on my parents very steep lawn.
Always on the proviso of pushing up the slope as I'd been told of council worker who was pulling a lawnmower and slipped and dragged it over his feet, used to give me nightmares just thinking about that.
I've seen those robot lawnmowers tackle some steep slopes also, if I had the money that's what I would be buying, if you think of the actual time cutting the lawn over the lifespan of the mower

This.
Street in my hometown had massive sloping gardens down to the road, they all did this.

I'd much rather be above a petrol lawnmower than below it! Sod that!
Terrace it now!
I spent 15 years cutting a sloped lawn. The cost of properly terracing it (2 large retaining walls plus steps etc was frightening c£50k) but in the end we spent the money and its the best thing we have ever done to the house.
A steal at £17,000 🙂
I've seen that used in the bank at ladybower. Looked like great fun just sitting there with the remote.
