Hi all,

Probably very soon I am going to need to write a large thesis in Latex and I have the following question: Is it possible to include .tex files as part of a large document, which themselves are also viable standalone documents that can be worked on and compiled?

For example, I would like to work on chapter 1, compile it, send it to my supervisor to look at but not the entire thesis.

I have a feeling I have just answered my own question in thinking this through. Is it a case of just having the master document and using the \includeonly command in the preamble for what you want include? Or is there a 'nicer' way of doing this?

Many thanks,

Chris

For my thesis I had a master LaTeX document with all the usual preamble. From this all the chapters were written in separate files and merged into the master document using \input commands. When I wanted to send out a partial preview I just commented out each of the \inputs that I didn't want to send and recompiled.

James.

Cheers James, I don't know why I suspected there would have been a 'neater' way.

Using the \include command seems to work quite well too, as .aux files are created for separate file so when you compile the master document, it is as though those are included (in contents, eq. references etc.).
