I can see that we have a few 'what printer' threads over the last year, but I am re-entering the market and am interested in people's experience.

What do you love or hate about laser printers? What are the upsides/downsides in your experience?

I would like a do-it-all wireless printer for everything from kids' homework to my academic documents to general household admin tasks. And I tend to have temper tantrums when technology doesn't work for me, or do what it promises it will on the box.

Lasers. Likes: Text is really good. Dislikes: Toner cartridges cost about as much as a new printer.

Inkjet. Likes: Photos and that sort of thing are better. Dislike: Limited lifespan due to the nasty ink sponge thing. Text is still a bit rubbish in comparison to a laser.

After having a B&W laser, a colour laser (ok but 4 toner cartridges ended up being ridiculously expensive) and an all in one colour inkjet (poor text quality), I finally settled on a good B&W laser for most of the printing I do, and a cheapish Canon inkjet for photos and the odd bit of colour.

Another vote for one of each. We have a HP laser/scanner attached to the router hardwired, and an inkjet shared from a PC, so no actual wireless, but everyone can print to them all (90%+) of the time. Toner is cheap on ebay. If I had to choose one I'd go for one of those "office inkjet" types, but I don't.
