i know its probably a love it/hate it place but...
iv never been and going for a week in October, anyone been for a week? did you rent a car or just taxi around?
only thing for sure that i have planned is a trip to the canyon, iv read the south rim is the 'real' canyon but we will just be doing a day trip to the west rim which looks spectacular enough 😉
anything not to be missed or to be avoided at all costs?
any other places you would recommend doing/seeing while we are there?
I was there for about 3 days, felt like the perfect length of time. The buildings on the strip were less tacky than I expected, the clients were tackier. I quite liked the old town, was some pretty good free concerts in the streets. I rarely gamble so that side didnt really appeal, so not their target audience but I enjoyed my time there.
There's a few articles around about the mountain-biking round there, if I had been there longer I'd have tried to rent a bike and try that out.

Go to Blackpool. See how long you can feel happy there and double it. That's the time to spend in Las Vegas.

That's a bit what I felt about Vegas.
Didn't need a car for Vegas most stuff is all on the strip which there's a bus that runs the length of it. Most hotels not on the strip have a shuttle bus to get you there. Also to make you feel a bit more at home there's a "BigBus" an old London open topped bus that does a tour of the strip and downtown good for getting your bearings and knowing whats where.
Lots of shows on would of liked to have seen more of them, too many to chose from really. We saw Penn and Teller who were very good.
View from the top of the stratosphere was amazing I didn't have the bottle to jump off the top though.
Mob museum was good a few of the pictures were gruesome though set in the old court building about how the mob used to run vegas.
Flew into Vegas for a 2 weeks trip around Uta and California, only did a walk up the strip the evening we arrived and then went to the world buffet at the Rio last night before flying home and that is all i really fancy doing there.
Regarding the Hoover dam, you can rent canoes and paddle down the river which is amazing, maybe an alternative to biking if you can talking the other half into that 🙂
