Any reason to buy one of these other the other?
Have narrowed it down, I think, to these two based on budget, processor and overall reputation of manufacturers. Will be for children to use for online school (assuming we're going to be doing more of that!) as well as them playing games etc. No need for any supamegaspeedzgamingrig type stuff, just need a decent, fast laptop. I'm hardly the most au fait with specs and ting, so...
And yes, it will almost certainly be from JL. Service, warranty back up etc are very reassuring. Would need to be something special in terms of a deal or product to look elsewhere!
Thoughts gratefully appreciated. Thanks.
I’d swerve that Lenovo, for some obscure reason it’s running Windows 10 in S mode. This limits you to store apps only so could be a pain
Re Windows 10S, if it's like my Surface Go, it takes about 30 seconds to upgrade to full blown Windows 10 Home.

Seem to remember doing something like that on my Surface Somethingorother when I bought it. Was easy, even for me!
Based on personal experience I’d get the dell.
Son had a Lenovo laptop. Hard drive fried itself. Luckily for us it came from John Lewis and was less than 2 years old so they replaced it with an hp. This has recently been replaced with a dell. (Working ok but power cord gone sloppy so not charging, plus has old tech HDD) The build quality difference between the dell and the other 2 is night and day. It just feels like it will last a good while. The one we’ve gone for is a bit better spec maybe than that one (I hope- it was £700!) but the others weren’t cheap either and felt like toys in comparison to the dell which seems workmanlike.
I don’t know how Ryzen 5 compares to i5- assume there’s not much in it to sway the lenovo over the dell.
Yeh, It's just a question of going into the settings and tapping a few clicks to get rid of windows "S".
Out of the two mentioned, the intel processor is better for the same price.
It's always worth checking, ryzen is generally better value, but not in this case.

The quality of the screen and keyboard may swing it, but ones dell and ones Lenovo, SO I suspect they will both be more or less on par in that respect.
Some of the Dell x505 laptops had a cooling issue - the way they ran the ducting meant the cooling was not sufficient, which meant the cpu would throttle itself. Not a big deal in and if itself but it meant you would get 70% of the processor you paid for. The Lenovo screens aren't super bright.
The difference between those two CPUs isn't higher and with the throttling issue, the i5 might very well end up faster.
The 4000 series ryzen 5s (4500u) are a quantum leap forward and well worth the usually small premium (often they are the same price) . Finding one may be an issue though. If you can find an Acer/asus/lenovo version they seem decent.
Just like we’ve got running thread title “Are you bored enough....” , should the title have been “This laptop, why yes it is “?
I did consider it! 😀
