Laptop required for general use, web surfing, facebook, homework using MS Office etc but not required for gaming, what do you recommend?

start with the pcpro a-list, then ebuyer is your friend.

Budget seems to have disappeared from thread title, looking at £350 max

Something of Ebay for £100 will do fine. I use a 6 year old P4 3.2 Ghz desktop and for office stuff/surfing and the software development I do it's fine.

I'd disagree with Shakey as -

Lenovo are the best built laptops full stop
The compaq has older and slower - cpu, motherboard, ram and is more expensive

Check www.it247.com I got my Acer Travelmate 8371 there. Top of the range a year or so ago. 13.3" screen, bluetooth, Core 2 duo su9400, 4gb ram, 320gb hdd, and a switchable graphic card (hd4330). I'm really impressed by what I got for £350 (discounted from nearly £800). Great thing is it weights under 2kg, has a part alloy case, very well made and it lasts around 6+ hours on battery and that's real use not just reading Word documents. Screen might be small if You want to watch movies but that is probably the only downside. They have some other computers on offer so worth a check.

Try the Argos clearance outlet on eBay. Very good prices and sometimes better than ebuyer.
