Hi quick question

I want to give my son an old laptop, so he can take it apart.

What if anything apart from the Battery, should I remove before he attacks it ?

Cheers ๐Ÿ˜€

How old is he? By taking apart do you mean gentle disassembly?

Personally I'd remove the hardest to find screws, otherwise you'll rip the plastics when trying to lift certain parts off after convincing yourself that all the screws had been taken out. Not that I've ever done that of course...

if you have any access to one, I'd have though he'd be better off with an old PC - they're actually possible to reduce to parts and build up again so he might learn something

unless it's just for him to smash up

He's 11, My plan was for him to take it all apart how he saw fit, kinda learning as he goes and ask him to take some photo's while he did it.

Laptop total right off so not expecting it back.

was just wondering if there was anything inside that could hurt him, if he started taking it apart with a hammer.

get rid of the LCD inverter! it can store a bit of a bang.

@scardypants.... Good Idea, an old PC just gave up the ghost as well, perhaps he could try and make that work after the laptop experiment.

Kids just don't seem to want to take stuff apart anymore. They just expect new stuff to appear. Thought this might be a good thing for him to do. but probably not, my ideas are usually pants.

Once you've pulled the battery, press the power button. That should discharge any residual current kicking about.

Can't offhand think of anything tearingly life-threatening inside a laptop, so long as he doesn't eat any of it.

I use to love taking stuff to bits as a kid, including a perfectly good radio once. The folks weren't happy.

Fair point. I am not risk averse, but I like to know what the risks are. In this case I am (was) completely ignorant of the risks.

TBH : He does not seem to be that keen on the idea as yet. Kids today eh ๐Ÿ™‚

Used to take everything apart when I was kid. Including the bolts from my dads stepladder. Now I've learned how to put things together again.

I take it back the kids are alright ! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I did interfere a bit as I banned his first plan of using a hammer until later in the destruction !

So he decided to go in through the front.

happy destruction type noises now coming from dinning room ๐Ÿ˜€

Oh, re: hazards.

If he disassembles the hard disk, there's some really strong magnets in there. Getting between them could give him a nasty nip.

(Speaking from experience: I found they were strong enough to attract each other through either side of my arm. Uttering the redneck's famous last words, "hey, look at this," they suddenly squirted round underneath my arm and pinched the skin really rather hard. No big deal cos I R MAN, but I expect there'd have been much wailing and gnashing of teeth if I was 11 years old.)

Injury's so far...skewered finger, from stabbing screwdriver into screen and finger, not much blood.

No magnet related incidents yet.

Most dangerous thing will be when Mum sees the mess !
