hi all
any thoughts on the freelander 2
is on a shortlist of potential buys
I know a couple of folk have them and say they get stuck as soon as there is a bit of mud. That's just Freelanders, not sure if they are 1 or 2 or what.
Its basically an off-roader for people who dont want to go off-road 😀
my sister drives one, I think she may tow a horsebox with it. I'm not a fan of them tbh
I had one for 3 years as a company vehicle. that included a fair bit of off road. the 4 wheel drive system is clever and worked quite well IMO.
the ride and comfort were fine. the main issue with these is the ground clearence. not that much, but mine was an 02 plate, so maybe they have improved on that.
Depends what you want to use it for. are you planing on using it off-road much?
It's a LandRover. Anyone who tells you that they're no good off road, has more than likely never driven one off road. I have and can assure you that you are unlikely to ever find it wanting. As a car for the road they're very capable and comfortable. The economy around town is poor but reasonable on a long journey. The bootspace is pathetic. In the current weather conditions it's very reassuring to drive, even with regular tyres the 4 wheel drive holds on to the road.
All of my experience is in a FL mk 1 btw.
I kinda worked for LR at the time the CB40 (Mk1) came out and was shown a video of the testing: Man, that thing can take a pounding! Especially impressive was the 'does the airbag go off in extreme off-road situations' test.
Don't know about the Mk2's - I hope they're better made than the MK1's !
Had the MK1 for a couple of years & tbh, I might have whinged repeatedly about bits always needing to be replaced,(...which they invariably seemed to with annoying regularity)& body panels never quite lining up( quite disgraceful, really),Lack of any real bootspace, but, in hindsight there was a lot to commend about it.
On road - It was a good vehicle to go touring round Europe in...albeit a bit noisy & the fact that I always found the seats too shallow, front to back ( & the lack of boot space)
Off road - Whilst it may not have have full Disco / Series credentials, it was remarkably capable when used off-road. The hampering bit being the 7 inch (?) ground clearance. But, without fail it always managed to get through 'stuff' - Needed a bit of careful planning sometimes, but, a lifelong Disco/Series owning inlaw became quite respectful of it's abilities. ( you could only get these types of vehicles to his house)
But, yes, I did enjoy my time with it.

KennyP and Tomh are, respectfully, completely wrong. The Freelander is very capable off-road - I speak as a Defender owner who got completely out-driven in Luxembourg by a skill-full driver in one. The only things that let it down off road are poor entry/departure angles and the fact that they are lower than a Defender. The ordinary driver will never get close to a Freelander's limits.
I live very close to the Land Rover testing area & experience centre at Eastnor & oftern see them whilst out riding. TBH them seem to go most places the bigger boys go. We had a S1 GS which we used both on & of road including bail hauling. Only problem was the overheating issues.
We also has a Forrester for a while, not bad either with much bigger boot
My wife has the restyled mark 1, auto diesel. So far 50k in 3 years, and she loves it. Never got stuck, even while towing 2-horse boxes across fields etc. Been marvellous in the recent weather. Servicing with LR is very expensive, but the cheapest on their 'menu', but there is a lot to service (now use my mechanic as its out of warrenty).
We've also driven a mark 2 on a LR experience day - it went everywhere that the Discos went. According to the LR chap the mark 2's needed some overhang protection for full off-road work, but that was more about rock protection. He also recommended going auto if you want the easiest for off-road as the car can really 'think' for you.
As previous people have said, way better off-road than the competition - and probably as equal on-road.
In another place, the same question is being asked:

Mate has one and it is very good, off road it works fine on road easy to drive. Did have gear box issues that took 6 weeks to sort.
very good off road , i did a landrover G4 challenge 2 years ago ,and was most impresed with it,
Irrespective of off road ability, they're still really gay. If you want a land rover get a proper one.
